Hogback High-Rye Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Colorado , USA
Reviewed February 7, 2019 (edited January 3, 2020)Light color and body. Tastes young, but far from bad. There is a lot of spice from the higher rye mash (36%) but it's still light from the lower abv. The corn sweetness comes on the back end and lingers with an alcohol finish. I like it, but a bit more time in the barrel and a higher proof would improve it quite a bit. -
Got this as a gift, so I can't speak to price (it's around $100 from what I've seen), in either case this is some great whisky. I love pear and smoke in large quantities and boy does this deliver! Tar, ash, smoke, brine, sea salt, peat, it hits each nose (especially with a few drops of water). As far as value, I think I still like Ardbeg's uigeadail more and it's the same price, but it's definitely worth a try if you love ardbeg and don't mind the price tag.

For a cheaper whisky this is not bad! Huge caramel notes with a touch of the spiciness. You do get a bit of the alcoholic burn that often comes with a cheaper spirit (you can tell they are rather loose with the heads and tails), but it is really not bad for the price. Throw in a cube or two and this is not bad at all. Once again, price is the key here... For $12 a fifth this is well worth it. I've certainly spent more on worse.12.0 USD per Bottle
