Reviewed October 27, 2023 (edited January 26, 2024)On the nose sherry, orange, melon, dates, vanilla, toffee, charred oak, honey. Palate: charcoal, vanilla, dark fruits, oak, sherry cask. Balanced finish, barrel forward with some heat. -
Nose: grain, peat, brine, oak, wet concrete, resin, pear, musty old attic, and bitter medicine. Water opens up some melon and stone fruit, burnt toffee perhaps. Palate: sweet and smoky, peaty of course, with undertones of vanilla, smoked meat, charcoal, ash, grain spirit. Smoky, peaty finish, slightly on the shorter side (for an Islay anyway).

Really, almost shockingly complex. There’s plenty of peat smoke, but it yields well to the sherry and other characteristics. It’s smoky, sweet, savory and fruity. On the nose smoked meat and wood and peat, candied nuts and fruits, toffee, leather, vanilla, salted caramel, petrichor and dark chocolate. On the palate peat and wood smoke, vanilla, petrichor, molasses, barrel spice, smoked meat and honey.

As expected, heavy peat here, and yet it’s unexpectedly quite complex. On the nose there’s not only peat, but also nuts, lemon, leather, dark chocolate, lime, and dried fruit. On the palate I get black pepper, toffee, leather, fennel, flowers, cinnamon, and vanilla in addition to the peat. Finishes long, of smoked fennel, almonds, and leather.
