Herradura Silver Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed December 29, 2017 (edited March 26, 2018)This is a great "next step up" tequila. It's certainly lightyears ahead of Jose Cuevero, and it's a bonus that it's barrel aged for just a few months to impart some of those woody, oaky qualities into a blanco tequila. Not a great tequila to drink neat, but certainly makes a great margarita! I keep this one on hand for that purpose, and save the Don Julio for sipping. -
Uncle Val's Botanical Gin
Distilled Gin — California, USA
Reviewed December 29, 2017 (edited December 21, 2020)Not gonna lie, Gin is not my thing, but my wife loves Gin, so after doing some homework I landed on this one to buy for her. We visited the Beefeater distillery in London during our visit to the city, and this gin certainly stands head and shoulders above that one. The botanicals are blended nicely, and the multiple distillations give it a very smooth quality on the palate with no burn. Easy to drink neat, but was even better in cocktails. I'm curious to see how this gin would taste after a few months in ex-bourbon casks! -
Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 29, 2017 (edited May 27, 2019)An outstanding Bourbon. The higher ABV gives it more pronounced flavors, especially the cherry notes (at least in the batch I had. Each one is different). A great "next-step" bourbon for those familiar with the spirit but want something a little more complex than Woodford Reserve or Buffalo Trace (which are also fine Bourbons in their own right!). -
This was my first introduction into peated single malt, and it certainly lives up to its reputation. This being said, getting used to the taste was certainly an adjustment. At first it felt like what drinking a campfire might feel like. I've come to love the smokey quality of Talisker, and upon multiple tastings, I'm able to get more notes of spice, bacon, and a chewy, almost granola-like quality. Also opens up a lot more with a few drops of water. Not recommended for whiskey newbies, but if you've enjoyed unpeated single malts such as The Balvenie and want to try a peated whiskey, this is a good first step before you try and tackle some of the Islay drams.

Don Julio Añejo Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed December 29, 2017 (edited March 31, 2019)I got this for a steal on sale in CO for $50. Living in the southwest, I've had the opportunity to try a wide variety of agave spirits in my travels across Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. This is easily the best tequila I've sampled. The nose hits you immediately with notes of butterscotch, caramel, and agave. The taste is incredibly smooth and lingers on the palate, leaving you wanting more. The finish is long-lasting, with some subtle notes of spice and more honeyed notes. A fine tequila! Don't mix this with anything. It's best enjoyed neat. -
Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 29, 2017 (edited September 21, 2019)Great easy drinking Bourbon. Light nose and very sweet on the palate. Received as a Christmas gift from someone who knows nothing about whiskey, but I'd say they still made a good pick, and at $35 a bottle, it makes a great gift.
