Journeyman Distillery Last Feather Organic Rye
Rye — Michigan, USA
Reviewed January 6, 2018 (edited January 3, 2019)Review for Last Feather Rye, not Ravenswood: A very sweet caramel flavor dominates this rye whiskey. Relatively smooth finish leaves you with a warm chest without a burnt throat. Simple but enjoyable. -
Journeyman Distillery Buggy Whip Wheat Organic Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Michigan, USA
Reviewed January 6, 2018This distillery really excels at making high quality yet affordable whiskeys. This definitely fits the bill. It’s simple but incredibly satisfying. There are caramel notes throughout with a mild minty taste and feel on the backend. -
Connemara 12 Year Peated Single Malt
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed September 6, 2017 (edited April 1, 2020)Very clear color, which I found surprising. Initial heavy smoked scent, taste hits your tongue softly with a sweet syrup taste that transitions gracefully into a smoked meat flavor. Very minimal backend burn. I actually really like this one. Reminds me of my rauchbier days! -
Journeyman Distillery Kissing Cousins Organic Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Michigan, USA
Reviewed August 15, 2017 (edited August 16, 2017)Much like kissing cousins, I try to avoid this whisky when possible. Wood and nutty initial flavors, followed by a hint of caramel, and almost painfully dry on the finish. Again, much like... nevermind. -
Balvenie Portwood 21 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 24, 2017 (edited August 30, 2017)Constant aroma and background flavor of wood. Strong honey and vanilla flavors, with an almost negligible burn. In fact, if you swish it around for about 10 seconds, the burn will be completely gone. Ends with a refreshing, minty-clean mouth feel. -
Journeyman Distillery Last Feather Organic Rye
Rye — Michigan, USA
Reviewed July 16, 2017 (edited October 13, 2017)Tastes substantially less harmful to my DNA than the non-organic version. Chem-trails. Elvis and Amelia Earnhart faked the moon landing in D'Jibouti. I have friends who don't really like rye whiskeys, but I think they'll like this one. Has a maple syrupy feel and smell. I'm honestly struggling to get beyond that flavor as well. A hint of lemon on the finish. Good rye matey! -
Coming from the 12 year, I taste very similar flavors in this 15 year. The chief difference I can detect is an amplification of flavor and an increase in backend burn. So there's a harder hit of caramel, a harder citrus flavor to follow, and a harder burn. I understand the tradeoff from a distilling perspective, and I'm glad I tried it once. However, from now on it's the 12-year I'll keep in my collection.

Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 10, 2017 (edited July 22, 2019)Initial taste of honey, with a nutty flavor following behind. More savory than sweet, though there is a sweet impression coming through with a raison or date flavor. Unbelievably smooth. My favorite whisky to date. -
Glenfiddich The Original
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 2, 2017 (edited July 22, 2018)Very smooth. I taste a nutty flavor, with limited sweetness. End of the drink has a pleasant saltiness to it, as if they had lined the rim. Very little backend burn, which surprised me. Good drink. -
New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Michigan), USA
Reviewed June 30, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)In this one I taste honey and yeast. It tastes thick, similar to an unfiltered wheat beer. I understand the beer barrel concept here, but it's just too unpleasant and uninteresting on the pallet to justify a place in a whiskey collection. The burn pushes back on your nose like a shockwave, and the general smell is of cheap bottom shelf liquor. Go figure. Try it once, then do better.
