Templeton Rye 10 Year Reserve Single Barrel
Rye — (bottled in) Iowa, USA
Reviewed December 19, 2022 (edited February 14, 2023)Been a while since I’ve reviewed something. Finished my MBA up last month and have been longing to try something good so I went out on a limb and bought this 10 year Templeton rye for $90. This is what I expected it to be….MGP rye but dialed up a notch due to the age of it. Tastes damn near exact to the rest of the distilleries that are using MGP rye so if you’ve had the 95/5 rye in the past then you should already know what this tastes like. In my opinion it’s good, real good. These are single barrel so I imagine they will vary barrel to barrel so it’s an expensive gamble if you get an off bottle. Would I pay $90 again for this? Well I wish it was around $60 but I will say the bottle looks much nicer than the previous design with the paper label on it. If it was cask strength it would also be worth paying the premium. Regardless though for a splurge purchase for me it was worth it. 12/19/2290.0 USD per Bottle -
4 Copas Tequila Blanco
Tequila Blanco — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed December 6, 2022 (edited December 28, 2023)Okay since Distiller had this at a 98 and the reviews were all high i had to find a bottle of this. There was a Total Wine about 40 minutes away and they had two bottles priced at $24 so i bought one of them. Great price but will the stuff inside be as good as Distiller says it should be? Let's find out. Upon opening this I see it's a clear blanco like the other bottles nothing important there. Pour a glass and smell the fresh cooked agave smell. God i love that smell so good. The smell wasn't the best ever but it certainly smelled good better than the fake vanilla you smell with a casamigos or any other adding flavors. First taste. Yes it's good not knock your socks off good but definitely is a very enjoyable tequila that has clean, natural flavors. Would i buy this at the price i paid? Absolutely. Would i buy this for over $40, probably not because there are a couple others that I'd purchase ahead of it i.e. El Tesoro or Fortaleza. Certainly a very nice example of a non-additive blanco and would certainly recommend to anyone looking. 12/6/2225.0 USD per Bottle -

High West High Country American Single Malt (2021 Release)
American Single Malt — Utah, USA
Reviewed October 14, 2022 (edited August 7, 2023)Not sure where all the low scores are coming from for this American Single Malt that's put out by High West? Opened this last night while i was feeling pretty toasty already and couldn't believe how delicious this smelled. The scent is intoxicating maltiness that gives the vibe of a malty cereal with some fruitiness added in. Oh my love the smell!! The mouthfeel is very soft and really coats my mouth with similar notes that the scent gives off. I swished this one around for awhile on each sip to really enjoy what this single malt has to offer. Finally in the end it goes down easy. The proof really gives this a chance to taste the flavors rather than burn your tongue off like the high proof bourbons and ryes do. Overall if you enjoy American single malts this is a nice one to have a bottle of. The price to me is a bit high for what it is but it's not too far out of line being that it's not a year round bottle on the shelf. If you like Stranahan's then give this one a shot. I was really wishing after i opened it that i still had some of my last stranahan store pic lying around. Oh well guess i need to go find another to compare. 10/14/2275.0 USD per Bottle -
Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel Rye 4 Year
Rye — Indiana, USA
Reviewed October 11, 2022 (edited December 6, 2022)Well I kinda wish I had a bottle of Dickel rye sitting in my shelf right now to try side by side because this smells exactly like it. Not a bad pour. Just enough sweet, spice, and dill to keep me coming back for another taste. But what i do have sitting in the shelf I can compare, is Sagamore Cask Strength Rye….. Well trying these back to back is pretty interesting because I wasn’t super impressed with the Sag but for the price I got it on clearance from a closing liquor store I was happy. So a little research and Sag is also MGP rye, so how do they compare? First sip SAOS 56.8%ABV. Spicy rye tiny bit of sweet lots of spearmint. You can tell this one is young but it’s not terrible at all. Next sip Sag 57%ABV. Very similar but more muted flavors. There’s definitely no spearmint but the overall flavor profile is very very similar. So which would I choose? It’s a toss up they are both similar but the SAOS has more of a spicy rye flavor to it so really it’s what you’re in the mood for that day. 🤷🏻♂️ Would I buy it again for $50? Probably not just because there are so many selections out there around the same price point to try out. But if someone asked me if it was worth trying at a bar I’d say yes if it’s a reasonable price per pour. I sure wish I was able to try the older SAOS bottles that were apparently amazing. Oh well maybe in another 10 years we’ll see them around again. 10/11/22
