G4 Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 21, 2022 (edited April 6, 2023)Another banger. I’m really loving these blanco tequilas with nothing added. 80 proof makes it all day drinkable and not super sweet either. I’m so glad I rediscovered tequila and moved away from the horrendous bourbon scene. Affordable and available. This is a great tequila! 8/21/22 -
Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 19, 2022 (edited October 16, 2022)Can't believe I never reviewed this one. I have about 1/3 of a bottle left and just realized i never reviewed this. There are probably a dozen others on my shelf I never reviewed either but as i find them again i will. On to the ETL. I paid $40 for this a couple years ago and it sat in queue to be opened for quite some time. When i finally opened this bottle i shared with some whiskey friends who had previously had ETL and kinda killed my buzz of wanting to try it. Here's where things change.... They both said their mind was blown and their previous experiences with this bottle were nothing like the one i had. It is a single barrel so some variation exists but i can't imagine it being night and day as they described. The particular bottle was from 2019 and i opened it in 2021 so maybe that year had a good batch....i dunno. So to me this was really good with a lot more sweetness than a blanton's or eagle rare but still had the same BT profile just smoothed out a lot more than all those mentioned. Would i pay $40 for it again? Absolutely if it tasted like that. Would i pay secondary prices? Hell no! A great bottle for retail maybe even double if you can't find it anywhere for two reasons a) it's actually pretty good b) your friends who know whiskey will be impressed you have an ETL. 8/19/2240.0 USD per Bottle -
Fortaleza Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 19, 2022 (edited February 25, 2023)Tried side by side with El Toroso and this is a very nice blanco. I've recently found myself leaving the bourbon/whiskey scene as it's been a nice ride but got sick of competing with the hundreds/thousands of others here in the Tampa area who camp out or have inside knowledge of when allocated bottles drop. And quite frankly once you taste 100 bourbons they all start to taste the same. Okay rant over.... Back to this nice blanco. I did some Distiller sleuthing looking for a good blanco after having bought El Toroso and it almost blowing my mind on how good it tasted. Fresh and earthy is what i felt were the most relative descriptors of it and this Fortaleza has excellent ratings as well so i figured I'd give it a shot. Price was in line with what i was willing to spend and i happened to find a bottle which apparently is a hard thing according to the internet. Who knew?? Anyway I like this one a lot and it has a very plant like natural taste to it with an undertone of almost vanilla? probably the agave I'm tasting but regardless I really dig this. After tasting Casamigos against this I really really don't think there's a comparison. Casamigos is almost syrupy compared to these natural blancos. Can't wait to continue this tequila journey (which is where i started in spirits many, many years ago). 8/19/2249.0 USD per Bottle -
Milagro Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 17, 2022 (edited February 25, 2023)Pretty boring and a lot of bite to it for a reposado. Trying alongside other tequilas this one ranked the lowest. A long time ago I loved Milagro, things have changed I guess. -
El Tesoro Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 17, 2022 (edited February 5, 2023)I thought I preferred reposados and anejos but a friend told me he liked the Blancos better to truly taste the tequila in its pure form. After trying a few blancos I agreed with this thinking, though I still like aged tequila as well. So this journey led me down the path of trying more blanco tequilas. I really thought that Casamigos was the pinnacle of a blanco tequila, boy was I wrong. After trying these back to back I actually was a bit disappointed with the Casa mainly because it was obvious that sweetener was added to it. Bottom line is this, if you want an unaltered delicious blanco buy this bottle and thank me later. It’s absolutely delicious and now I’m on the hunt for the next amazing blanco. 8/17/22 -
Sagamore Spirit 'Sagamore Reserve' Moscatel Barrel Finished (2017 Limited Edition Release)
Rye — (bottled in) Maryland, USA
Reviewed April 20, 2022 (edited April 21, 2022)Maybe I’m in the minority but I really liked this bottle. Got it for $30 because a liquor store was going out of business. Figured what the heck and snagged it because for half the cost of wholesale I’m not losing either way. So the Moscatel cask flavor really gives it something unique which you don’t taste until after it goes down and the aftertaste sticks around. I tried this with two other friends and they had the same reaction and they agreed that they really liked it also. The aftertaste had a wine/grape flavor that wasn’t like a cab or sherry finish but more grapish, if that’s a word. So for $70+tax I don’t know if I’d splurge for it but if it was under $60-65 I think I’d say it’s well worth it since it has such a nice unique flavor that you find in any other rye whiskeys. 4/17/22 -
As others said this is not by any means made to be drank neat. I took a quick dram to try on its own and I’ll not make that mistake again. Trying this in my ginger ale now as a highball and it’s still not very appetizing. It has this strange aftertaste to it that I can’t identify but it’s very off-putting. There was a liquor store going out of business near me and I grabbed this bottle along with a Sagamore Cask Strength, Sagamore Moscatel finish, and a bottle of Schwartzhog all for $85. I think I paid $15 for the Glenmorangie so I at least don’t feel like i threw out my money because I’ll use it as a mixer as it is intended to be. 4/20/22
