Te Kiwi Lime
Fruit Liqueurs — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 27, 2019)I'm not a liquer fan and generally don't like sweeter spirits. I was going to avoid this one but glad I tried. Using local spring water and kaffir and Tahitian limes this was a stand out of the tasting at this distillery. Not sweet at all and packed a pure lime punch. Would like to try this in a caipirinha. -
Te Kiwi Gin
Distilled Gin — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)Another Takaka distillery and another tasting flight. I definitely preferred the Dancing Sands efforts all round. The offerings from this distillery although used the same water and most likely common ingredients wasn't as refined and polished. It had an odder industrial nose to it and the palate more a sanitiser taste. This permeated through the range. -
Murderer's 14 year Golden Rum
Aged Rum — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 30, 2019)#9 On Dancing Sands distillery tasting. This was stock purchased from original owner 4 years ago when they took over. Might need more than a small hit to do justice to the review especially as it was number 9 in the flight but preferred their gins. -
Murderer's Bay White Rum
Silver Rum — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)#8 On Dancing Sands distillery tasting. Nice enough drop but not in the same league as their gin. Molasses based. -
Dancing Sands Chocolate Gin
Flavored Gin — Golden Bay , New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)#7 On the Dancing Sands tasting flight. I was wary given it's chocolate gin but given their general approach to gin making I shouldn't have been concerned. I tasted it and it was spot on, not sweet at all. I enquired what they used and they mentioned cacao husks and rooibos leaves which was interesting. The cacao really shined through. -
Dancing Sands Sun-Kissed Gin
Flavored Gin — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 27, 2019)#6 On the Dancing Sands tasting flight. Strawberries and locally sourced rhubarb, are candied and then infused into the standard gin at a lower abv. This tasted very nice straight, definitely can pick out the real quality ingredients. -
Dancing Sands Wasabi Gin
Flavored Gin — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)#5 On the Dancing Sands Distillery tasting. Wasabi root, grown locally in Golden Bay combines with the navy strength (58%) gin and gives a mild wasabi kick. Horopito, orange and almonds and kelp round it out nicely. -
Dancing Sands Barrel Aged Gin
Barrel-Aged Gin — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 27, 2019)#3 on the Dancing Sands tasting roadtrip. Aged for 3 months, two types of casks were used: ex 14-year Murderer’s Bay Gold Rum barrels and new French Oak barrels. Very nice drop, not overoaked too the point it detracted from the gin flavors. Update 2 months later. I got a 6 pack of 200ml bottles of which this was one. Interesting they aged it for 3 months in 14 year old rum barrels then finished in charred French oak. Nice drop! -
Dancing Sands Saffron Gin
Flavored Gin — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 30, 2019)#2 in my Dancing Sands Distillery tasting. This has the base gin infused with over 8,000 crocus flowers per single batch. Combined with cardamom and blended with rosebud infused water it tastes really quite nice. I ended up buying a bottle of this. -
Dancing Sands Vodka
Unflavored Vodka — Golden Bay, New Zealand
Reviewed December 26, 2019 (edited December 27, 2019)On a xmas roadtrip at the top of the South Island of NZ I popped into the Dancing Sands Distillery in Takaka near we were staying. We visited the springs themselves which were stunningly clear. As they are sacred to the local Maori no one is allowed to swim in them but no problem making spirits it seems! I haven't bought a bottle of vodka in 20 years I reckon but this stuff was very nice so after tasting 10 or so of their spirits I bought this one along with a saffron gin. Takaka is the quintessential hippie town with a lot of dreadlocks and no shoes and the current owner of the distillery from Israel came here loved the place and bought the distillery 4 years ago. They have done well as their product is very nicely done.
