We thought one Sat my wife and I would offload the kids for the day go for a long walk, breakfast and then hit a few drinks places. This one had been on my radar for a while as I'd tried one of their gins last year. We grabbed a tasting flight of 5 gins to share a small bottle of tonic and got stuck in. This was my first and joint favourite with the blood orange version (summer). Lovely sweetness from the sugar kelp. Easy to drink straight or with tonic.

Glen Garioch 1993 21 Year Cask 776 (Adelphi)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 19, 2020 (edited January 28, 2020)Ah man I heard Elon Musk went through production hell with the Model 3, I wonder if it's anything like Business Case hell. 2 weeks in and already 60 hr weeks, nearly 20 days straight by next Friday! I definitely needed a whiskey now I've hit the first milestone... Anyway I think I grabbed this one as I'm a fan of Adelphi. They could take pure ethanol and turn it into a semi decent drop..a bit like my uni days when I managed to get hold of a supply of food grade ethanol from a chem lab and make 20% hazelnut beer out of it (I'm still not sure how or even why I did that as logically it makes no sense)...however unlike that god awful drop this is not to bad. It really shows the power of casking..be interested to know how long they finished it off for. These guys are coming to NZ Dramfest in several weeks time and along with That Boutique Whiskey I'll be making a bee line for pretty rapidly. In saying all that however this drop is for me slightly overdone casking wise, not that complex, needs a fair bit if water (often a sign of imbalance in my mind) and not amongst their best efforts. I have a feeling the original base cask they got hold of wasn't a stunner as it seems a bit layered on, too thick, artificial and not well integrated. Still it's because I hold Adelphi to a high standard and by any other comparison it's a nice drop. Roll off Business Case hell and roll on Dramfest!. -
Del Maguey Pechuga Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed January 13, 2020 (edited April 3, 2022)Funnily enough my last review on another Del Maguey echoed @cascode sentiments exactly on this one. Read his earlier review its a good one. Such is the force of this one that even with its flavour profile muted you can tell its a dram to be reckoned with. I'd love to taste it in its prime, a fresh bottle would be awesome, still it's got very good bones. Thanks cascode! -
Del Maguey Minero Santa Catarina Minas Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed January 13, 2020Thanks to @cascode I've managed to taste up a great Del Maguey storm of mezcals. All have been lovely including this one however in taking and comparing notes we have come to the conclusion that it's a drink which is best drunk fresh. A number of the samples like this one whilst lovely are a bit muted. There are definitely core differences, however having a fresh Del Maguey prior the Chichicapa it definitely is a lot more vibrant. As such i won't rate or provide further notes (which to be honest my tasting notes are usually severely limited!) and instead refer you to Cascodes excellent reviews. -
Hazelburn 8 Year Old First Edition - Cask Label
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed January 11, 2020 (edited January 16, 2020)Ah Springbank I won't say you always come through as there have been a few oddities and over cooked items but man I love it when you do. Great body, perfect balance and complexity.. all the things I'd like to say about myself but hey I'd more than settle for a bottle of this to compensate. I had a newly opened bottle of the Glendronach 18 afterwards and though it was great (I'm thinking these days definitely more a 4.25 to 4.5 rather than higher. This is definitely on par and in some aspects exceeds. Sadly you can't get the first Edition anymore. I was going to take a punt on a later release at $100USD however the tasting notes seem a lot different to mine. Light and fruity vs a rich deeper oily sherry bourbon thing going on. -
Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch No. 004
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 8, 2020 (edited April 7, 2022)A step down in price from the 21 year but still a damn nice drop. Reminds me of a CS less complex Bunnahabhain 18 in a way. Similar raiseny sherry profile. Great value at $65USD a bottle. Doesn't even need a drop of water.
