Butterscotch in the nose, but it took a while to get there. At first I didn't get it. The flavor slammed me with nuts at first, very good, and there is a spice I can't identify (I'm not much of a cook) that comes in late. That spice is balanced very well. The finish: the spice is there and isn't overpowering, which is great for those days I am not feeling aggressive.

Jim Beam Bonded Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 19, 2020 (edited September 11, 2021)Lots of vanilla in the nose. Excellent flavor, with spice caramel. Lingering spicy finish. -
Again the nose struck me as medicinal, until a few drops are added. Then the sweetness started to come through. There is a hint of banana bread. The longer it sits, the better it gets. Very spicy. There is a bit of that banana taste, but also something that doesn't hit the tongue right. It reminds me of anise. Mind you, it doesn't taste like it, it's just that both of them I have a slightly unpleasant taste to me. Has a long spicy finish, which I really like. However there's that something else there that detracts.

1792 Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 18, 2020 (edited September 21, 2020)This had a very sharp nose at first, but after a few seconds the vanilla started to come out. Very spicy, with toffee notes in the tasting. It has a long, warm (nearly burning) finish. With a few drops of water, the nose mellows and the taste of toffee moves more toward caramel with cherry notes, maybe even candied cherries. The finish mellows too. But the spiciness stays... -
I added a few drops of water. Smoke and caramel in the nose, with oaky vanilla on the tongue. The finish is spicy, and maybe just a bit long in the alcohol in the finish. The finish isn't great, but the longer it's there, the better it is. Almost my new daily, but that's still Weller Special Reserve.

Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 6, 2020 (edited August 24, 2020)Licorice and maybe a little bit of mint on the nose. There is also a some peach there. The taste has a bit of an oily feel, very nice, even though it doesn't display legs in the glass. The pitted fruit flavor is there as promised with a bit of charred wood and spice. The finish is wonderful, with the fruit fading, the wood staying, and the spice lingering. That's the finish I like. There are buttery notes that come to the fore when a few drops of water are added. Wonderful. -
This is my second tasting. The nose is young. It's nice unless you inhale too much, then the alcohol hits. There is the peat again, but it's not overpowering. Beyond that it's too thin. I like the burn in the finish - it lingers. Some of that I suspect is youth. Sometimes you hear people refer to bad whiskey as "paint thinner", or "varnish". It's not that bad, but I start to understand the reference.
