Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed May 5, 2022 (edited May 14, 2022)Tropical sugar cookie, coconut, tangerine on the nose. I really enjoy the nose. The palate seems to be a let down from what I was expecting with the nose. Mostly honey and vanilla on the palate. However, it comes back around with a nice finish though, bringing back the flavors noted on the nose. Nice long finish too. Overall, kind of a weird one. The nose and finish are really nice, but the palate is pretty blah. Thanks to @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington for the sample! -
Balcones Texas Straight Bourbon Spring 2021 Single Cask #8 (Lost Lantern)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed May 2, 2022 (edited May 10, 2022)This was consumed several weeks ago, but I'm not sure what happened to my review. So this is from memory. I tried this side-by-side with Balcones Blue Corn Bourbon. I remember this one feeling a little smoother and sweeter, the rough edges of Blue Corn smoothed out a little, despite this being younger than the Blue Corn. Sounds like it should taste better, but with Balcones sometimes rough edges are a feature more than a flaw. I wonder if some might think the 2021 Peated is less interesting than the 2020 for the same reason. Overall, I would rate this as an equal to the Blue Corn, depending on whether you want something smoother or want to be roughed up a little. Thanks to @ctbeck11 for the sample. -
Balcones Peated Texas Single Malt Whisky
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed May 1, 2022 (edited November 25, 2023)2021 release, aged at least 48 mo, bottled at 59%. I'm not sure how it's possible to improve on perfection, but they've done it. It has all the big bold flavors of the 2020 release, but another year in the barrel has decreased the burn, smoothed out the flavors a little, and seemed to add a touch more vanilla sweetness. This was a pour from a friend's bottle, but I need to get this one in my cabinet. -
Gift to a friend, who offered a pour. The nose is quite apple cidery. The palate has apple, raisin, honey, vanilla, malty, with some oaky tannins on the back end. Nice mouthfeel and proof. Nothing extraordinary stands out about it, but it seems a good value, bought under $60. Can't find anything off about it. I'd put it up against Balvenie 12 DoubleWood, and would be surprised if it didn't come out on top.

Bluegrass Distillers Single Barrel High Rye
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed April 30, 2022 (edited May 1, 2022)3 year-old, 58ish% ABV. Grassy, young, hot. Not especially enjoyable, but I've also had worse. -
Glenmorangie Signet
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 29, 2022 (edited July 13, 2022)Whiskey night tasting with friends, tasted blind. The nose and front end come across like other Glenmorangies, but in the back comes the taste of old oak and then a big chocolate note, which almost tasted artificial, like Tootsie Roll even. I really enjoyed this one and was thrilled to be able to try, but after tasting, I know it's not one I'd want to splurge on. -
Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 29, 2022 (edited May 13, 2022)Whiskey night tasting with friends, tasted blind. Sweet vanilla, caramel, leather, oak. Nice bourbon. Wouldn't mind spending some more time with this one. -
Glengoyne 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 29, 2022 (edited February 8, 2023)Whiskey night tasting with friends, tasted blind. Nothing particularly remarkable about this one, but easy to drink. Honey, apple, malty. I'd take this over Glenlivet 12 for what appears to be about the same price. -
Michter's US*1 American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — USA
Reviewed April 29, 2022 (edited September 17, 2022)Whiskey night tasting with friends, tasted blind. Pretty down the middle, but well-made. Caramel, vanilla, some good oakyness shows up. More flavorful than the proof would suggest. Not bad. Also, I think this may be my first time trying any Michter's product. I'd be willing to try some others. -
Willett Pot Still Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 29, 2022 (edited April 30, 2022)Whiskey night tasting with friends, tasted blind. This seems to get a lot of hate from bourbon drinkers. I thought it was decent, although I'd say overpriced - are you paying a premium for the fancy bottle? Caramel, tart, floral.
