Balvenie Peat Week 14 Year (2003 Edition)
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed September 25, 2020 (edited August 30, 2021)A greener peat bomb on the nose than most Islays which allows that toasty American oak to share the stage. Notes of candied almond, plum and butterscotch are in there too but socially distanced. Velvety and luscious like a perfectly ripe avocado on the way in but quickly gives way to some spice and Sichuan heaven pepper heat as the campfire finds some oxygen. Green but smokey slow charred oak lingers in the corner as pineapple and salty pretzel exit the party together slowly and definitely less than 6’ apart.98.0 USD per BottleBrewster -
Aberlour 16 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 14, 2019 (edited February 14, 2020)Balanced sweet and rich, full of dried dark fruit and fresh peach but tempered with nutty chestnuts and spice. Luscious mouthfeel that tapers long with oak and vanilla. Very good.65.0 USD per Bottle -
Glen Garioch 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 12, 2019 (edited January 31, 2020)Opens with pear, honey and sweet fruit (white grapes, maybe some lemon or orange peel) but the high alcohol (48%) takes over to warm the mouth with a nice amount of spice and smokey bourbon. Lengthy finish with the sherry and oak finding their way in at the appropriate time. Despite the high alcohol it’s not at all astringent.59.0 USD per Bottle -
Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength (Batch 1)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 3, 2018 (edited February 8, 2018)1/29/18 Great campfire. Smokey but not too much peat. Less earth than the Bowmore small batch but smoother. Lasting. Improves towards the end. -
