A solid blanco at its price point. The nose is vaguely floral with some odd undercurrent of mixed berries. Palate is sweet with a body of sweet grass and agave, finishing with an accurate note of almond butter (courtesy Distiller expert review). It’s a little rough around the edges but would make a suitable mixer.

Hornitos Black Barrel Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed March 8, 2018 (edited June 14, 2021)The expert notes are spot on. Nose has dusty wood, bourbony-vanilla, peppermint and a touch of sweetness from the agave. Palate is fairly rich, and drinks, well... like a whiskey. More notes from the nose present themselves with plenty sweet agave presence, more dusty charred oak and dry cinnamon. Finish is long with more of that dusty wood flavor; it's sharp at first due to some alcohol but mellows out nicely. -
Chinaco Añejo Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Tamaulipas, Mexico
Reviewed January 20, 2018 (edited June 22, 2020)This was an unexpected try for me. I admit I was already a little under when I had the chance to taste, so my impressions can’t be as sharp as I prefer. However, The nose is sweet like salted caramel and key lime pie, but the palate is practically a juxtaposition with its rather intense woodiness. The same rich limey agave flavor comes through with wood, black pepper and charcoal which sticks to your tongue on the finish. It became more interesting as the spicy finish became numbed, with more of the savory and sweet elements pushing forward. Namely more salted caramel and vanilla. Another reviewer noted ‘celery’ in the finish, and very strangely enough, I agree. There’s also a fair touch of ethanol present. I disliked it at first but it really grew on me once I got past the wood. Maybe I’m just new to añejo..? -
Virginia Black American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana, USA
Reviewed December 1, 2017 (edited February 1, 2018)This is a weird one. There has to be some added sweetener in here, because it’s a lot more sugary than expected. Both the nose and palate have the same quality: caramel corn. Sugary caramel on popcorn. A touch of charred wood comes in on the finish, as well as a dusty, papery taste. It’s not bad I guess? I admit I was sold by the bottle, but I feel it’s underwhelming for the price. A sweetened, <4yr old blended whiskey for $40 bucks. It’s not terrible but I won’t bother with it again.
