Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 13, 2016 (edited June 11, 2017)Nose - Sherry is definitely present on the nose, floral honey, lightly toasted oats, lightly tanned leather, cinnamon raisins, fresh hay, prunes. Taste - Dark dried cherries, prunes, raisins steeped in a red wine with cinnamon and nutmeg, lightly toasted oats that have been made into an oatmeal, light oak bitterness. Finish - Slight herbal bitterness that's actually quite pleasant, light bitterness like if you bit into the seed of a prune. 88/100 -
Nose - Definitely a heavy sherry influence here even though it's only 1% of the whisky, dark pitted fruits, vanilla caramels and milk chocolate are in the background. Sweet spiced plums stewed in a red wine. Taste - Sweet dark cherries, luxardo maraschino cherry syrup, rye bread, cinnamon, dark chocolate covered cherries, wild cherry pepsi concentrate. Finish - Lingering bitter walnut sweetness, more luxardo cherry syrup, a drying dark chocolate bittersweet. 89/100

Nose - Best described as "inoffensive artificially sweetened whisky drink", faint nectarine/peach scent, freshly made hot simple syrup. Taste - Apple/pear cider that has splenda or equal added and watered down a bit with a light dusting of cinnamon. Lightly bitter apple peels and orange pith. Extremely thin mouthfeel. Finish - Lingering light apple peel bitterness with that artifical sweetener sweetness. Stale apple juice. 70/100

Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 11, 2016 (edited November 11, 2016)Nose - Mildly sweet vanilla, faint scent of Welch's Strawberry Soda, hint of caramelized sweet pineapples, toasted peanut skins, lightly toasted almonds (sweet nutty). Taste - Sadly very one-dimensional, spicy cinnamon/vanilla caramel sweetness with a hint of oak. All the fruit in the nose seems to have disappeared. Finish - Light tingly heat that quickly fades to a vanilla/brown sugar sweetness that also quickly fades. 78/100 -
Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed July 10, 2016 (edited August 3, 2017)Nose - Sweet vanilla, light hint of oak, sweet herbs, very very faint bananas, unlit charcoal briquettes. Very faint stale peanuts. Taste - Very thin mouthfeel, "smooth", this odd, faint, artichoke-like herbal bitterness, medicine-like sweet, vanilla, light cinnamon. Finish - Faint cinnamon heat, weird splenda-like sweetness which all fades pretty quickly away. 70/100 -
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 8, 2016 (edited June 6, 2017)Release #6 - 140.2 proof Nose - (w/o water) Dark caramelized brown sugar, barrel aged vanilla, dark chocolate covered cherries, maraschino cherry syrup aged in oak barrels. (w/ water) less cherry notes, but more dark chocolate. Taste - (w/o water) Intense cherry vanilla sweetness, drying oaky cinnamon, concentrated coke syrup, but somehow still with the carbonation. (w/ water) The sweetness is tamed back a bit and the coke syrup has lost a bit of its "fizz" but is still sweet and delicious. Finish - (w/o water) Lingering cinnamon warmth, pleasant oaky coke, pleastantly syrupy sweet. (w/ water) Mellows out the sweetness a bit and turns it into a lightly drying, yet buttery finish. 91/100
