Good stuff at a good price. 3.5 stars

It's just a more potent expression of the regular Jim Beam as far as I can tell. It's not bad, but definitely nothing special. 2.5 stars

Auchentoshan is one of those distilleries whose products are ever-present but always in the background. I guess that applies to Lowland Scotch in general. Nevertheless, Auchentoshan has made a decent name for itself in the Scotch world, and I’m going to be going back redoing my 3-sentence reviews of their core range from a decade ago. With that, I’ll be leading off with the expression that I most associate with the distillery, this here Three Wood. Nose: Heavy on the dried fruit. Dried apricot, raisin, cranberry. Macadamia. Pumpkin spice. Orange peel. Black pepper and pipe smoke. Some root beer mixed in there. A bit of pineapple. Pencil shavings. Sawdust, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Irish soda bread. Palate: More of the macadamia and pumpkin spice. Walnut and toasted almond. Heavy on the root beer as well. Roasted pineapple. Raspberry. chocolate. Plum, apricot, and raisin. Candied orange. Big on the Irish soda bread. A tad overly confectionary. Vanilla, honey, and toffee. Finish: Raisin and dried apricot. Raspberry chocolate, vanilla, honey, and toffee. Sugar cookie. Cinnamon, black pepper, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Moderate-long length. This is a vibrant lowland scotch. It isn’t too complex, but the fruit flavors you do get are rich. This would benefit massively from a kick up in ABV. 40% ABV prevents this from reaching greatness. At $70, this is not quite worth the squeeze. This absolutely needs a boost in ABV. It’s good though. It’s a staple for a reason. I enjoyed. Critically speaking though—I can’t say I’m too impressed with a 40% NAS. Kick it up a notch, Auchentoshan. 3/5.
