Macallan Classic Cut (2017 Release)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 1, 2018 (edited March 30, 2018)Easily the best Macallan I’ve had. The best way to put this is like so: if you like Macallan 12 Sherry Oak, it’s that and much more. The nose is pure sweetness: Cherry, raisin, brown sugar. The taste is very similar to the classic Mac12 but MORE. Its everything great about Macallan turned up to 11. This really opens up with a few drops of water. The flavors on the tongue become more complex and enjoyable. Truly an amazing release. This puts the “Edition” line to shame. I hope they turn this into a regular offering instead of a limited one. -
Macallan Double Cask 12 Year
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed December 30, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)If you’ve ever had Macallan and said “I really want A LOT more oak taste” then this is for you. A lot of resemblance to the classic Macallan 12 Sherry Cask. I’ll definitely be going back to that instead of the double cask as I feel the flavors are much more balanced. -
Glengoyne 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 30, 2017 (edited June 19, 2018)I received this one as a gift. If you like green apples, this scotch hits you in the nose and mouth with green apple flavors and smells. It’s not amazing, but it is very good. For the price, you can do much worse. It’s worth trying if you’re an Apple fan. No bite to this at all. -
The Macallan Edition No. 1
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 30, 2017 (edited January 8, 2021)12/30/17 - $103.99 off the shelf. The nose on this is amazing. Vanilla, sweet, really amazing. It’s too bad the taste falls flat. It hits your mouth with a rich feeling, but none of the nose is present. Spicy and dry, it finishes with a little smoke and falls flat. Based on what this sells for on the secondary market, I’m shocked there wasn’t more to this. It’s good, it’s a very good Macallan... but doesn’t live up to the expectations I had based on Edition #3. 3.5/5 -
Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 24, 2017 (edited January 1, 2018)I had an opportunity to try this at a family Christmas party. The nose of this is pure gingerbread with hints of fruit and nuts. The mouth feel is oily and smooth. There is no bite to this bourbon. It explodes with flavors ranging from vanilla to a nutty oaky flavor. The finish lasts such an incredibly long time. And that’s a blessing. The oils continue to dance on your tastebuds and makes you want to go back for more. I’m not a whiskey snob, my go-to is a Macallan 12 or EH Taylor Small Batch. With that being said, this does live up to the hype. It was an amazing treat and I was lucky enough to get 3 generous pours. Is it worth $3000 a bottle? Absolutely not. Is it worth the sub-$300 MSRP? All day, every day.
