Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye

Initially nosed and tasted at cask strength and whoa this is a heavy hitter with crazy tannins. Diluted to about 45%. All notes below refer to diluted tasting. Nose: Lots of vanilla. Some maple and cinnamon here as well as black pepper. Burnt French toast anyone? Palate: Rye, rye, and more rye. Super spicy immediately. Black pepper and cinnamon. The spice continues, particularly along the back sides of the tongue. Very little sweetness to this one, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Finish: Long with lots of oak. Tannins linger and the back of the palate tingles with the excitement of what it just experienced. At the very last moment some faint green apple notes emerge. Overall if you are looking for a true to the grain rye, this is it. There's no messing around here. The cask strength allows flexibility to dilute or not dilute, particularly for a cocktail (I had this in an old-fashioned last night and it was great). Certainly this is very good value and one I would plan on keeping around if it remains available.

I was excited to see this in the store and thought that the $58 Cdn was a very reasonable price for a cask strength whisky. My daughter liked the maple leaf on the box, so that was all the convincing it took that I should buy it. First sampled without adding water, then diluted to approximately 46-47% Nose Rye spice and sweetness, high alcohol evident, but surprisingly not overpowering. Vanilla prominent and a sour-like fruity oaky-ness. Raisin oatmeal. After dilution, notes of honey and peaches emerge Palate Wow - high proof far more hard hitting than on the nose. Oily and Heavy tannins that give a very full mouthfeel. Following sips have accustomed my mouth and the burn becomes secondary. Water takes down the alcohol hit and brings out the flavors of the rye grains and I'm happy that it maintains its significant spiciness. Some tart fruits come forward here. Caramel, oak, and vanilla evident as one would expect. Finish At full strength, exceptionally long and warming. Water allows the oak to linger longer by decreasing the alcohol sensation, but it still remains long and delightful. What a wonderful surprise buy! Definitely not disappointed by the flavour or the price point. Well worth having in the cabinet. I also enjoyed a very delicious old fashioned with it last night and I'm sure it will serve as a very versatile friend!

Sweet tropical notes and peaches hit you initially on the nose and then it opens up to sweet cloves (if you can imagine that). The palate is oily and rich and very smooth for the ABV. The finish is warming and lingers in the best way. This stuff is great!!!

A burning mouthful of amazing flavours tropical fruit and caramel! Was sipping it slowly and watering it down here and there and then tried an old fashioned with it Wow it was amazing so much depth maybe my fave old fashioned did water it to maybe 40-50% for it

Whoa! This one comes loud and fast. I get a ton of tropical fruits on the nose. Papayas, pineapples, coconut. Then there is a nice vanilla and even some bubble gum. There’s a little bit of rye spice, but I find I have to really dig for it. This nose is fruity and fresh. On the palate, vanilla, dark caramel, that rye liquorice, and a building heat. The finish is warm. Cinnamon hearts, then some of that bubble gum and fruit comes back. Nice stuff and a great price. Will definitely pick up another bottle
