Brian and Genise Hollingworth opened the doors to their Black Gate Distillery in 2012. From award-winning rums, to native Australian liqueurs and now their single malt whisky, they've been making waves since they started. Their single malt whisky is double-distilled in a copper pot-still and is matured for two years in ex-sherry casks. The distillery is well on their way to using only local grains and fruits. Note: This review was completed using the 4th batch.

"The nose opens up with immediate vanilla, marzipan, hazelnut, plum, and cherry all rushing to be the first to arrive at your senses. It is surprising crisp and sweet. Once the initial surprise aroma rush is over, you are left with a pleasant field of lime rind and new wood tang. The light malts hidden beneath all this might well have been dusted with sugar. On the tongue, it is very thick with sweet raisins and citrus notes coming through in front of banana which builds in intensity before leaving your mouth dry. There’s an average length to the finish which has a prickly mouthfeel and warm caramel melting over the tongue accompanied by plum and cherry--all immensely appealing. "
