Reviewed July 30, 2022 (edited January 2, 2023)In 2005, an Islay local fisher saw something strange in the water, near Bruichladdich Distillery. When he approach the odd thing it was... A LOST YELLOW SUBMARINE. Along with the distillery manager, they made a phone call to the department of defense and told them that a submarine was found, that belonged to the DOD. The Defense department said that no submarine was missing, and if Bruichladdich have one, they must have stolen it. Nothing else happened for 3 months, till Bruichladdich released a first edition of the Yellow Submarine whisky, called WMD (WHISKY OF MASS DISTINCTION) with a picture of the submarine on the label. It was only then that the department of defense went to the Distillery to retrieve the sub-acuatic vehicle, recognizing it as their own. To this day, Bruichladdich keeps a replica of the Submarine in their premises and they have released two expressions. The original 14yo one; and this 25yo, vintage 1991, which was matured in Refill Sherry & Bourbon, and Spanish red wine casks. Bottled at 46%abv, only 1991 decanters were ever released. I am not going to lie. I have been trying to find this bottle for years and i have finally found it. It is only fair that it enters to my special reviews in order to reach the 1000 whisky critics. This is my review number 996. On the nose, it is outstanding. Coca Cola notes, Bbq, bacon; it is like a "Soapy bacon". Increible aroma. Sherry has appeared. Chocolate with red fruits. Brownies and an old orange peel. Tangerine and more chocolate. On the palate it is so fruity and spectacular. Orange juice, tangerine juice and a little sulphuric. Pepper. After a first sip, it released brownies, cherry syrup. It has a orange acidity which is great. Milk chocolate.Very elegant and pleasant. Aftertaste is incredibly wonderful. Brownies and the orange acidity that i told you before. It is quite elegant and full. The second time i felt a nice bite, earthy and salty, lovely really. Lots of ginger. Overall, this is a super complex, wonderfully crafted whisky. It is not a cheap dram, but it is completely worth it. I got to say i have checked one single malt from my bucket list. My score for this whisky of mass distinction, is 100 over 100. Sláinte Mhath!!! -

Reviewed November 25, 2020 (edited July 30, 2022)I am a monstrous Beatles fanatic and when I saw this, I just had to taste this, good or bad, for the mere novelty. In conversation with a great Distiller friend, @PBMichiganWolverine he mentioned he had this and was generous enough to share and provide a taste of this Drammers Club exclusive. A golden pale yellow color greets you in the glass. Initial nosing reveals the full spectrum of aromas. This is light, fruity, earthy and sweet with a smidge spice and phenols. Ripened peach, raspberry, blueberry, bananas, apples and Concord grapes provide the fruits. Cleaned mushrooms, straw, petrichor (thanks @Davie-Warner for sharing that word) provide some earthiness. Milk chocolate/Whoppers candy, butterscotch, butter pound cake, confectionery sugar, toasted marshmallows provide sweetness. A dash of spice of cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled about. Then there is that rubber hose note that floats above the plethora of aromas A embodiment of aromas simply stated. But the complexity and breadth of aromas is vast and such the tangible aspects need not be rehashed (see above for the flavors). The fruits remain on the palate once all is consumed. Some tropical is more apparent of toasted coconut and dried pineapples. The spices and oak tannins caboose the fruity finish. All in all, leaves you wanting another sip to slowly enjoy. The is a fabulous dram. Near perfect in that from nose to finish, all aromas and flavors remain existent and true. I am sure I am missing some other aromas/flavors mainly because of the wide array of possible interpretations and complexity. But that is a good thing. On this Thanksgiving Eve, in this dreadful year of 2020, a small and bright bit of cheer in a glass. Thank you @PBMichiganWolverine for providing me a rare sample. Absolutely wonderful. Reviewed July 5, 2020 (edited July 30, 2022)This was the highlight of a recent Bruichladdich tasting I attended online. On the nose: pepper, cream, light toffee sauce, faint berry notes, funky mushrooms. In the mouth, there are ginger snaps, caramel and more pepper spice. The finish is long and spicy, with a subtle caramel finish and a hint of sweetness. A lovely balance and probably the best Laddie I’ve yet tasted. -
