Based in Tennessee, Corsair is fairly punk rock when it comes to their approach to whiskey. (Well, the kind of punk band that can actually play their instruments and know a good hook!) They are constantly experimenting with alternative techniques and flavor profiles, but with well thought out approaches. In this case, they split malted barley into 3 parts, and smoked each one with a different fuel - cherry wood, peat and beechwood. Then they pot distilled the whole thing and aged it in new, charred oak. So it's like a peated single malt, but from the approach of a younger generation who likes to take things in new directions.

Tasting Notes

"Well, it's smokey (duh!), however the flavors are nicely tempered. The cherry adds a sweet smoke (like BBQ), the beechwood adds a spicy one and the peat adds a hint of rubber (in a good way.) Dark fruits like blackberries, bing cherries and plums waft through the smoke, as do vanilla, spice and pumpernickel bread."
