Reviewed June 17, 2021 (edited October 11, 2022)Nothing offensive on this, but the extra toast covers a lot of the rye I expected. I wouldn’r have known it was a rye by the taste. That said, the nose is like caramelized sugar, mint, and oak. Probably bottled a little too hot for me, I get a slight oaky dryness through the palate and really short finish. Maybe I should’ve added a splash to release some flavor, but it’s too late. -

Reviewed May 4, 2021 (edited April 20, 2023)This review is for Batch 1. Nose is toasted rye bread with apple butter. Unusual combination, but pleasant. The palate starts woody and continues with light fruitiness, adding anise and mint. Cinnamon comes forward on the finish. This is a very nice whiskey. I liked this quite a bit more at the second and third sitting than I did the first. A good rye for non-rye drinkers. Two years on and I stumbled on this same bottle on sale at Liquor Barn in Lexington, KY (last bittle) for $75. Absolutely delicious.80.0 USD per Bottle -

Reviewed February 4, 2021 (edited November 9, 2023)This is a very good toasted rye whisky with great nose and flavor. Not overly smokey like campfire, but toasted nuts and spice on the finish which hits my palate very well. I have only found this while visiting family in Louisville.90.0 USD per Bottle -

Reviewed November 27, 2020 (edited December 5, 2020)Neat. Neck pour. Okay, I love Batch 1 and then came across a DEPs single barrel today. So single barrel, store pick, heavy toasted finished MGP Rye? Steal my heart. On the nose, this single barrel is definitely more stereotypical MGP rye. Decent amount of dill up front that was not present on Batch 1. Lots of cinnamon roll goodness too. Sweet, doughy, covered and smothered in sweet cream icing. Very very peppery. It’s interesting because the sticker says “Heavy Toast” but I remember more of the second barrel influence on Batch 1. This is lightly toasted by comparison with only a hint of the toasted marshmallow. Fantastic mouth feel (it is 121 proof) and it lights up the tongue with flavor. Powdered sugar and maple syrup. Mid palate is stereotypical MGP Rye but then the back of the palate and finish is pure magic. The second barrel finishing comes in with this wave of great flavors. Toasted marshmallow, like the roasted marshmallow on the top of sweet potatoes. Then that cinnamon roll goodness lingers. Ah this is great stuff yet again. I may sway towards liking batch 1 more. I feel like this is more stereotypical MGP. If you like MGP Rye, you should definitely invest these Down Home single barrels. -

Reviewed November 8, 2020 (edited November 25, 2020)just glad I don't have to add this lol. nose - total toasted barrel note. Creamy vanilla, but ethanol all over the place. Light oak, it's young. But sweet. Where's is the rye though? I couldn't tell this apart from the bourbon they toasted. Taste - interestingly up front this is all sweet toasted cream and oak, but once i swallowed I got the rye and then back to that young and oasted barrel note. Just sweet and sweet and some rye spice. This is very good for what it is but yeah, not one to chase. I'm at a 1.75, solid flavor but the youth puts it down a touch.80.0 USD per Bottle -

Reviewed November 1, 2020 (edited November 9, 2020)Neat. Neck pour. Toasted MGP rye that is barrel proof practically. Yes please. The batch 1 of the Toasted Down Home Bourbon was just okay but did seem to improve with subsequent batches. I am hoping they took those learnings and applied them to the rye here. Plus Toasted Bourbon was held down for starting with such a young bourbon. Shouldn’t have the same issue with this rye. So the nose is interesting. I’m getting this toasted almond immediately and as I dig behind it, it lacks the MGP signature I would expect. Getting mostly light fruits behind the almonds. Like a medley of apples. Little cinnamon. The rye comes off as a rye bread. Little pepper. The finish is more subtle than Michters. It’s interesting but no stand out quality on the nose. Oh wow. The texture is like a thick syrup and the flavors are instant. Toasted coconut, maple syrup, vanilla frosting, cinnamon roll. The finish bring more frosting, hit a rye, and circles back to the toasted coconut. It’s so deliciously sweet. Well done Down Home. I was gambling on you but it paid off. This may be my favorite MGP rye in the collection. Such a treat.
