Excellia Tequila Blanco
Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Many compare quality tequila production with winemaking, and Excellia is where the twain meet. It is the brainchild of Jean-Sébastien Robicquet (G’Vine Gin) and master tequila producer Carlos Camarena (Tapatio & El Tesoro). This is a rare instance of an aged blanco, which has been aged several weeks in a combination of grand cru Sauternes casks and Cognac barrels.
Tequila BlancoDistilled from 100% blue Weber agave, it is typically unaged , clear, and bottled straight after distillation. Sometimes rested in stainless steel up to 60 days and can also be aged in wood for no more than 30 days.
"This is an unusually rich blanco, with heaps of warm spices up front. Golden apples and pears are the secondary flavors, with more of the vegetal notes hanging in the shadows. This unique, heavy-style somewhat hides the true essence of agave, and may not be to the liking of true aficionados, but it’s still rather pleasant to sip and is a worthy experiment."
