Rye
KGB Spirits // (bottled in) New Mexico, USA
Taos Lightning is a brand that was originally founded by Simon Turley at Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico in 1820, popularized by frontier settlers. John David Albert was a distillery worker who was one of a few men who held off a siege at the distillery during the Taos Pueblo Revolt, during which Turley was killed and the brand with it.
Now resurrected by KGB Spirits, this rye is made with 95% rye and 5% wheat. It's aged a minimum of 5 years in a dry climate warehouse at a high elevation that is exposed to the elements.

RyeUnlike bourbon, rye whiskey can be made anywhere in the world. But if made in the US, the mash bill recipe must be at least 51% rye and it must be aged in new, charred oak barrels with no age requirement. Elsewhere, the rye whiskey will be made keeping the country of origin's rules regarding the recipe and minimum aging.

Tasting Notes
"Fittingly named after a resistance fighter, this more assertive expression builds on the flavors of the Governor's Reserve Straight Rye, with bolder spice and wheat cereal notes. Cinnamon, nutmeg and clove elbow their way in past Earl Grey tea and some dandelion floral bitterness. Honey syrup and vanilla provide a pleasant drizzle for a rye bread base that carries out into the finish. "
