Kōloa Kaua'i Dark Rum
Kōloa // Hawaii, USA
Kōloa’s dark rum offering is unaged and "enhanced" with additional caramelized sugars. Their rum, produced on the island of Kaua’i, is distilled in a copper pot still from crystallized sugar.
Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.
"The aromas of this rum are of deep, concentrated molasses, and coffee. There's a bit of heat too, but it's a welcome contrast to the richness. On the palate, the flavors are overshadowed a bit by the heat but there’s a very complex and satisfying rum peeking through. Molasses and espresso give way to secondary flavors of clove and cinnamon. An ice cube tames the heat a bit and reveals more sweet coffee. The finish lingers with mild cinnamon. This would make a fine Dark 'n' Stormy."
