Mister Katz's Rock & Rye
NY Distilling // New York, USA
Rock & Rye was a popular concoction in American bars in the late 19th and early 20th century, masking what was often cheap rye with rock candy and sometimes citrus peels and ginger. In this updated iteration from NY Distilling in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Mister Katz (Master Distiller Allen Katz) takes a younger version of their Ragtime Rye and mixes it with rock candy made with sugar from the local In the Raw sugar factory and an infusion of botanicals such as dried orange peel, dried Bing cherry, cinnamon, and other spices.
Herbal/Spice LiqueursHerbal and/or spiced liqueurs make up a bulk of the liqueur family. Oftentimes the recipe or formula is top secret and decades if not centuries old and were created for “medicinal purposes.” Any type of liquor can form the base. Sugar is added prior to bottling.

"The botanicals compliment the whiskey nicely, pushing the natural spiciness of the spirit into the fore, while adding subtle texture. The cherry and citrus notes are the most prominent, with hints of cinnamon and clove. Though the rock candy adds sweetness, it's not as sweet as one might expect. Best served on the rocks or as a cocktail modifier. "
