Appalachian Gap // Vermont, USA
The Appalachian Gap Distillery was started by casual home brewers who became obsessed with distilling after taking a class one weekend. When customers show how much they like their products they take great pride in saying, “I made that.” Mythic Gin is distilled from a mash comprised of barley and corn. Among the eleven botanicals used in the distillation process, balsam fur, sorrel, and rose hips are the stand out ingredients.
Modern GinAlso has been referred to as "Contemporary", "New Western", "New Wave", and "New American". This style is not legally defined. In general, this category of gin, while it does contain juniper, places less of an emphasis on this botanical. Other botanicals not classically used in London Dry gins are often utilized and often highlight botanicals grown in the region the gin is produced. Most produced as either London Dry or Distilled Gins.
"Mythic doesn’t seem terribly appropriate here. Standard is a more apropos title. The hallmark notes come marching in the usual order. Juniper, crushed coriander, lemon rind, and a big aroma of neutral spirit. The palate is equally simple and straight-forward. Juniper berries, chopped up soap, crushed cereal, mild spice, and the soap comes back again for a bitter finish. Make a 1:1 ratio gin and tonic and put a little lime wedge on the rim for good measure."
