Made since 1954, Old Monk rum is India's favorite rum. Despite sharply declining sales in recent years, the brand sold nearly four million cases in 2014. While the rum carries an age statement of seven years, it should be placed firmly in the category of "dark rum" due to the addition of molasses and other flavoring agents.

Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.
Tasting Notes
"The nose carries a waft of ethanol and molasses combined with artificial cherry and prunes. The rum enters with the molasses and ethanol, followed by the aforementioned cherry and notes of grape-flavored cough syrup. There is a strong saccharin bitterness that coats the palate, a bit of smoke, and a minerality that suggests table salt. Subsequent sips again find the prunes along with other dark dried fruit, raisins included. Suitable for multi-ingredient tropical drinks and nothing else."
