Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye Whiskey

Nose: Standard rye nose. Heavy spice. Some dusty peanuts are present as well, along with mild alcohol. Palate: More of that spice continues. Some wheaty notes, such as a whole wheat bread appear. The rye spice is definitely present. Finish: This burns going down. The flavor lingers in the back of your throat. Overall, this is a pretty good rye for the money. Still not at the level of Rittenhouse or Sazerac, but decent. Definitely more suited for cocktails, as the burn makes sipping difficult.

Solid for the cost

Overall: There is a lot of competition in the <$25.00 range, if this was $20 dollars or less I'd grab it all day, but as it approaches the $25 mark I feel like it doesn't have the depth of flavor to compete. All the same, it is a straight ahead enjoyable rye. Nose: Pumpernickel bread that morphs into a sugary spice. Palate: A nice medium mouthfeel, with plenty of rye spice up front, but quickly follows up with a sugary bubblegum esq flavor. Finish: medium in length, but with a great exhale flavor of woody malt.

On the nose: Spice and vanilla Palate: A hint of that sweet vanilla at the start but it's a rye- it's punches pretty quickly with that spice mid/late palate with a hint of apple or stone fruit. Finish: A longer than expected finish of spice that lingers on the tongue. Overall a really approachable rye, it has the strength to stand up in a cocktail.

Definitely picking up the nutmeg with hints of cinnamon. Dare I say notes of banana nut bread? Yes, I believe so and maybe a slight tease of black licorice. All in all, a tasty rye and easy on the wallet at just under $30. I would buy it again.
