Ardbeg Wee Beastie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 16, 2024 (edited February 17, 2024)Nose: Smokey and sweet. There's almost a salty, cured meat scent. Needless to say, the nose is fantastic. Palate: The smoke is surprisingly mild on first taste. The proof punches you at first taste, then fades. Very few other notes than smoke and booze. Finish: Some smoke comes back on the end, especially after the alcohol punch goes away. There's some black pepper and a strange almost melon like sweet note. Nothing that detracts from the experience. Overall, this was not at all what I expected. There's some major alcohol punch at the beginning (the beastie, perhaps?) and then not a ton of smoke. The notes on the end are very pleasant. Overall, for someone who doesn't often like Islays, this is a very pleasant whiskey. Reasonably priced as well. -
Nose: alcohol burn, from the proof. also, heavy vanilla and some caramel. Some baking spices, like nutmeg. Palate: Heavy burn, with mild sweetness. Finish: As the burn subsides, the sweetness kicks up a notch, and the toasted vanilla note comes in heavily. It slides down your throat with an extra burn, but the sugary goodness holds. Overall, this is a crazy good bourbon. Incredibly sweet from the wheat mashbill, but that only improves the experience. It is expensive, so it is definitely not an everyday drink, but fun for the occasional splurge.

Absolutely delicious. It tastes like a Manhattan in a bottle. It has all the best notes of vermouth, the cherry cola sweetness and fruity, balsamic-y sugar notes, but it also has a significant enough amount of bitterness to where it is pleasant to drink, unlike straight vermouth which can be sickly sweet.

Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed May 5, 2023Nose: Salt, agave, some citrus. Palate: Very light, almost juicy in its sweetness. Finish: The tequila burns going down, and sits relatively heavy on the back of your palate before disappating. This is a perfectly inoffensive blanco tequila. Outside of the strange initial sweetness, really nothing out of the ordinary. Great for mixing into a marg, or a Paloma, and probably fine for a chilled shot, but there is not much complexity going on. However, for Jose Cuervo, that's saying something -
Nose: Quite savory. Some orange comes in, later as well as some canned peach Palate: incredibly light taste, almost watery, especially on the beginning. Finish: As it fades, some of those sweet floral notes return, but overall this is a very neutral shochu. Overall this is a very interesting drink, quite approachable. Works perfect with a large meal, or mixed in a highball.

Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye Whiskey
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 28, 2023 (edited March 2, 2023)Nose: Standard rye nose. Heavy spice. Some dusty peanuts are present as well, along with mild alcohol. Palate: More of that spice continues. Some wheaty notes, such as a whole wheat bread appear. The rye spice is definitely present. Finish: This burns going down. The flavor lingers in the back of your throat. Overall, this is a pretty good rye for the money. Still not at the level of Rittenhouse or Sazerac, but decent. Definitely more suited for cocktails, as the burn makes sipping difficult. -
I rarely comment on the visuals of a spirit, but I was surprised by this. I poured it into my glass and could see through and to the bottom. I also rarely comment on the bottle, but the shape of this bottle is very hard to pour from. Nose: Very unflattering. Has an acetone smell mixed with some fake seeming caramel notes. Quite disappointed in the nose. Palate: Incredibly hot. The alcohol hits your palate immediately and doesn't leave. This seems much higher proof than it is. There are little noticeable flavors, possibly some agave and caramel. Finish: This burns in the back of your throat going down. No new tastes emerge. This is a surprisingly not terrible experience. However, it isn't a particularly enjoyable one. I am overall quite disappointed with this tequila, especially considering what I paid for it. While in almost never do this, I may try this tequila with an ice cube to see if it makes it more drinkable and less higher proof. Side note: the bottle is terrible to pour from.

Nose: Insanely sweet. Heavy apple cider, some lavender. Agave is still present, however. Palate: Incredibly interesting. Straight buttery sweetness. The apple is still present. Strangely enough, its like biting into a caramel apple. Finish: This tequila becomes somewhat spicy on the finish. It takes on a slight agave quality on the backend. The fruit comes back in heavy in the back of your throat. Overall a very interesting tequila. Much sweetier and fruitier than anything I've ever tasted. A bargain for the price, but much too unique and un-tequila like to recommend.

Casa Noble Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed February 7, 2023 (edited April 24, 2024)Nose: Very savory, lots of vegetal texture, and an almost umami notes. I can tell this will not be a light and fruity blanco. Palate: I was wrong; its very light. Some agave notes, some salty textures. Very pleasant. Finish: The finish does not linger long. Soon after finishing this tequila, the taste will disappear from your mouth. Overall, I am very disappointed by the taste. It is quite pleasant and inoffensive, but I expected much more, especially after the nose. The nose sets you up for a highly flavorful experience that the rest of the bottle doesn't deliver. Still, this is a very good drinking experience, but for the price, I'd rather drink El Tesoro. -
Nose: Spicy, nutty. I detect some alcohol notes. Palate: Heavy spice up front. I detect a peanut note that the smell definitely predicted. Finish: Does not linger long. The spice coats the back of your throat, but it is not heaby with flavor. Overall, this is a very spicy whiskey. There is a slight nutty quality, but nothing of note. I am slightly disappointed by the one note nature, however, it is enjoyable enough as a sipper.
