I've heard good things about this Irish whiskey. I'm not a big fan of Irish whiskey and what I've heard is good things for a budget Irish whiskey. Still, I'm cautiously optimistic.
N: A hit of floral, fruity (apple and lime) complexity immediately. Wafts of vanilla with lightly toasted wood. I get how that scent could be the marshmallow described on the back of the bottle. Alcohol comes through.
P: What a huge let-down. It's light with bits of fruit and spice, but alcohol is the overwhelming flavor here. The alcohol doesn't taste bad - it just tastes like alcohol. I get a decent amount of light vanilla oaky sweetness with some clear creek water, some light cinnamon and ginger, and some apple. Mild cereal.
F: Alcohol with some lightly floral fruity flavor. It's a light and boring finish. And it's unfortunately tainted by the alcohol.
- Conclusion -
This is a smooth whiskey that will appeal to many, particularly casual drinkers. For anyone looking for complexity, richness, or personality, look elsewhere.
Comparing with some other budget whiskey, this is a sizable step down from Pure Scot Virgin Oak, but a definite step up from regular Pure Scot. It's kind of in the Crooked Fox range. I'd take this over Powers if offered, but I definitely wouldn't buy it again. With its low proof and light flavor, this probably won't even be very good for blending, unfortunately.
If I had to choose between this and Crooked Fox, I might actually take Crooked Fox. Considering that, this is in the 9 to 10 range. Unfortunately, I'm thinking it's a 9. This is certainly not worth more than about $15.
