Tomintoul is located in the Glenlivet estate in Speyside and named for the nearby village, which is at the highest elevation in the Highlands. All of their whiskeys are air dried, with no peat in the process. This one spent the last year of its aging in Oloroso sherry casks.
"The sherry influence on this rather full bodied, viscous dram is very noticeable to the point where it almost tastes like a very boozy sherry instead of a Scotch. Only a faint cry of whisky-ness rises to the surface, allowing some dark chocolate, spicy oak and heat. If you really like sherry in your whisky, this is for you. But you have to really, really like it. Like, a lot. Did I mention it mostly just tastes of sherry?"
