Usquaebach 15 Year
Usaquaebach // Highlands, Scotland
Usquaebach means "water of life" - the origin of the word "whisky." This once popular brand of blended Scotch, dating back to the 1760s and originally owned by Twelve Stone Flagons is now owned by Cobalt Brands. This is a blend of Highland single malts and grain whiskies, the youngest of which are 15 years and no more than 20.
BlendedComprised of both single malt(s) and single grain(s) often from many different distilleries; if Scotch or Irish must be aged for at least three years in oak barrels; Irish may include single pot still whiskey in the blend.
"This is an oddly vegetal whisky with a very heavy, almost chewy weight. There's a prominent saline quality in both the nose and palate, with pine forest earthiness, soy sauce and touches of smoked ham and pepper. A citrus and grassy element cuts some of the earthy richness. Super funky, but not unenjoyable. You just have to be in the mood and like very briny whiskies. Try it with some oysters!"
