Westward American Single Malt

Toasted barley, honey, stone fruits, nuts and cherry make for a delicious combination in this impressively balanced whisky. It’s packed with flavor and unblemished by any of the youthful notes that often mar craft whisky. I’ve long viewed American single malt as underaged and overpriced, but between this and the recent Balcones releases I am happy to consign that opinion to the history books.

Banana bread. all banana bread. the nose feels like it and so does the taste. So interesting how hard it comes on.

Look of it - Nice golden hue with a touch of red in sunlight. Nose - I get a sweet molasses like that sticks as it turns into herbal, smoke and the meaty funk. Taste - Starts sweet at the tip of my tounge as it tingles the sides of them. Then there's a floral note that goes into smoke and that meaty funk hits the back and lingers. Finish - Smoke brisket-esk with a last herbal note as it dissipates.

Nose - dried fruit, most notably prunes, hint of chocolate sweetness and brownie batter Palate - cocoa powder, dark chocolate, more brownie mix Finish - oily malt shows up then finish with some bitter chocolate

Butterscotch orange peel and spice very herbal nose.

Enjoyed this. Sweet overall.

Bottle kill/drain dump review. Shared with a group of friends (socially distanced of course) about a week after opening. It was one of their favorites out of a flight of 6 American whiskies and I didn’t mind it terribly. Shared again last weekend with a different group and it was absolute least favorite. This bottle was only open about 6 weeks and the stinky, yeasty note just got more and more pronounced. Dumped the last 1/8th bottle down the drain. Guess the morale of the story is to drink it quickly if you get a bottle.

Sweet, caramel candy, vanilla. A little too one-dimensional and sweet to be right up my alley, but a good no thoughts, hot day sipper.

This is rich and has a lot going on, but doesn't have off notes. Spice, caramel, and apricot balance out with a lot of richness. Perhaps a bit on the harsh side, but not at all bad. It tastes like an evolved Swift Single Malt. A bit of honey is here, but it doesn't overwhelm in any way. The richness and balance are really impressive. This is a successful American single malt. There is so much interesting flavor and balance going on here without polluting the sweet, smooth finish. I spend a lot of time wondering whether I like whiskeys, but this one I know I love. Sweet, tart, and bitter balance quite well here. Might be a bit sweet for many, but I love it. Bourbon meets Irish Whiskey and the result is terrific.
