Wild Turkey Rye 101

A tad thinner than the bourbon, but with all the fun spice notes of a rye. Great licorice-anise balance with a touch of oak.

Nice budget rye here. You won't confuse this with a bourbon. Mint, citrus, sweet and viscous. Cinnamon finish hangs around and goes down easy. At $28 per litre I always keep one on hand.

1 liter bottle. Amber-gold color with thin, wispy legs. The nose is spicy and peppery right off the bat. Rye, fennel and black licorice. A sting of ginger. Dry wood, like an old deck after a thaw. Dry fruit: figs, sugarplums and prunes. The rye spices dance on the palate from the first sip. It's grassy and peppery. The middle of the palate has touches of yeast and sourdough bread. Nutmeg. Prickly orange peel and ribbon candy. The pine needle and forest resins permeate throughout. The finish is leathery cowhide. Cinnamon and prickly herbs.  Tobacco leaf. There is chocolate and mocha in the long finish: dark and dusty.

Floral vanilla and sweet grain on the nose. Just a whiff of spice. Sweet, vanilla oak, grassy herbs in the mouth. Ethanol burst, then rye spice, eucalyptus, and nettles comes on through the finish. Medium length finish then sweet-sour aftertaste. Medium oily mouthfeel, dark straw color. Bought this to mix, but it's not bad drinking out of a mug with a little ice. More interesting than the WT 101 Bourbon. Enough spice and umph at 101 to hold up well mixed in a classic cocktail.

Great wild turkey oak and fruity flavors with some extra spice.
