This week Diageo announced the release of the 2023 Distillers Edition collection in the US. This annual limited edition collection features single malt Scotch whiskies which are double-matured in different wood casks. For this batch, six different distilleries were selected from various regions in Scotland including the Lowlands (Glenkinchie), Highlands (Oban, Dalwhinnie), Islands (Talisker), Islay (Lagavulin) and Speyside (Cragganmore). A mature whisky from each distillery then has a second maturation in casks seasoned with a different fortified wine selected to compliment it.
These seasoned casks are made in a Scottish cooperage with heavily-charred new wood cask ends and re-charred American oak casks. These casks are then seasoned with the selected fortified wine for a month. Then the mature whisky is re-casked into the seasoned casks for up to six months.
Only one batch is made each year. Notably, this year the brand has updated the packaging and removed the distillation and bottling dates that appeared on previous collections. The 2023 Distillers Edition is available now nationwide.
