Fireball Cinnamon Whisky
Flavored Whiskey — CanadaTasted May 29, 2021Tastes like a cinnamon mouthwash that I used growing up. Not too sweet, but the consistency is a little too syrupy for me to drink straight. Definitely a mixer, and a little goes a long way.
Johnnie Walker Black Label
Peated Blend — ScotlandTasted May 29, 2021Not usually a Scotch person but this is nice. Definitely picked up raisin on the nose. A little sweet with vanilla. Very little burn. Almost has a saltiness to the finish. Very nice whiskey.
Goslings 151 Proof Black Seal Rum
Dark Rum — BermudaTasted May 19, 2021Rich and spicy with a lot of complexity, like the flagship black seal. Deep molasses/ brown sugar. Hides the alcohol well. I accidentally added too much to my Dark and Stormy. Be careful with it!
Wild Turkey Bourbon 101
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted May 11, 2021I’m pleasantly surprised with this one. Incredibly good for the price. Wild Turkey 101 is all “sweet and heat” with some pleasant vanilla and baking spices notes and a nice long finish. My only criticism is it is a little sharp and a little thin, but heads and shoulders above other bourbons at the same price point. Very sippable!
Myers's Original Dark Rum
Dark Rum — JamaicaTasted May 10, 2021Nose has a lot going on. Overwhelming with all the spices and banana fruit notes! Palate is complex, too, though the alcohol burn and bitter finish are a bit much for me to sip neat. I believe I will leave this to dark and stormys.
1800 Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, MexicoTasted May 5, 2021Not a bad tequila. I like it’s citrusy nose and sweet palate, but it’s a little on the thin side. Reasonable price, though, so this will be a margarita tequila and not a sipping tequila. Worked very nicely in our grapefruit margaritas.
Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee — Tennessee, USATasted April 29, 2021Never was a fan of Jack, though it was not for a lack of trying. I grew up and went to college in Tennessee and it seemed ubiquitous at college parties. Whenever I traveled abroad and said I was from Tennessee, Jack Daniels is what people associate with the state. To me, it’s a combination of it being too thin and the banana/candy corn getting in the way of the vanilla/caramel. I much prefer an equally priced sweet bourbon like Evan Williams to Jack. Guess I should have been born a few hours north in Kentucky. Cheers!
Hendrick's Orbium Gin
Modern Gin — ScotlandTasted April 23, 2021It’s like regular Hendrick’s cranked up to eleven! All subtleties are gone. Right from the beginning, you taste more bitterness and more floral notes without losing any sense of refreshment. The wormwood doesn’t taste like absinthe so much as just earthiness. I don’t do a ton of sweet gin cocktails, so this works perfect in martinis, g&t’s, and Negronis. Would definitely get again.
Hendrick's Gin (44%)
Modern Gin — ScotlandTasted April 18, 2021It’s more subtle than I remember, but definitely has a medley of different floral and herbal notes, including the rose and cucumber, that made me first love this in college. Hendrick’s was the gin that got me excited about trying more herbal and floral forward gins instead of the clean, modern, low-juniper gins like New Amsterdam. It may not be alone at the top of the shelf anymore, but it is still delicious.
Crown Royal Deluxe
Canadian — Manitoba, CanadaTasted March 27, 2021I was surprised when I read about Crown’s notes of fruity grape, but sure enough, there it is. An inoffensive and semi-novel sweet and smooth whiskey, I guess, but nothing interesting enough to take me away from my bourbon.
