Sagamore Spirit Cask Strength Straight Rye
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Maryland), USA
Reviewed June 12, 2020 (edited September 18, 2021)Delicious. My pour cocked in at 112 proof. Viscous mouthfeel with a Cognac like finish. Dark fruit and pears persist throughout. Really enjoyable and smooth. Definitely dangerously delicious -
Compared to younger bottles from the same vintage, I think this is starting to taste over-oaked. There is a lot to like here as far complexity goes, but I feel like I am reaching for it. While there are subtle caramel notes, any sweetness or bright fruity notes are overshadowed by ashy woodiness. Somewhat thinner than I would have liked and the finish does not develop as much as I want. I will revisit at a later time to see if this benefits from being opened and being allowed to sit80.0 USD per Bottle

The nose is a burst of orange marmalade, followed by burnt pear and a hint of pearl onion. Flavor is marmalade cut with apricot preserve, a hint of dry champagne, peach skin, oak, and a hint of malt sugar in the finish. Overall, not too complex. Medium-thin mouthfeel, pretty light and crisp, not hot, with a short finish.30.0 USD per Bottle

Barrell Dovetail (125.24 proof)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in) Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 12, 2020 (edited June 4, 2024)This might be my favorite bottle I've tried this year. This is the fourth bottling (Batch 4 if you will) of the Dovetail. Coming in at 125.24 Proof, this is really an amazing whiskey. The rich rum and fruity Port wine really shine through, and the finish has that characteristic mint that was present in the first bottling. Despite the high ABV, this doesn't drink hot. Dangerous, decadent, delicious.65.0 USD per Bottle -
Darroze Bas-Armagnac Unique Collection Distilled in 1996
Armagnac — Domaine Couzard Lassalle, France
Reviewed May 12, 2020 (edited February 22, 2021)Rich, decadent, chocolate covered prunes and fig. Thick, syrupy mouthfeel with layers of flavor, from dark fruit to a hint of cocoa. There is magic here in this bottle. Coats the mouth and lingers without ever being too hot.80.0 USD per Bottle -
Perfectly passable and moderately enjoyable rye whiskey. The fruity sherry notes are unmistakable. You can tell that this is definitely sweeter than any whiskey would normally be without this kind of addition or significant barrel finishing. Yes, it drinks hotter than its proof (90) but not any more than 100pf. Undercurrents of chocolate, plum, and fig. It almost tastes like there is a touch of chocolate rye malt in the mix. Interesting and worth $20 a bottle. I wish it were higher proof20.0 USD per Bottle

Paul Beau VSOP Grande Champagne Cognac

Booker's Bourbon Batch 2020-01 "Granny's Batch"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 12, 2020 (edited May 12, 2020)Best batch I've had in some time. Better than any 2019 release, maybe better than any 2018 or comparable to "Kitchen Table," which was my favorite that year The 2020-01 "Granny's Batch" smells of warm peanut brittle, brown sugar, and fried apple fritters. A wide complexity of flavors comes through with old-fashioned cinnamon donut, peanut brittle, caramel, vanilla and candied orange spread through a medium-long finish.80.0 USD per Bottle -
Smoke Wagon Private Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Nevada), USA
Reviewed March 21, 2020 (edited December 20, 2021)Drinking the South Jersey Bourbon Drinkers' "Tombstone" pick which clocks in at 12 years, 114 proof and is liquid delicious. One of the most complex barrels I've tried. White chocolate and lavender are the first things that come to mind, but there's a pleasant spicy finish with hints of heat and dulce de leche.
