Smoke Wagon Desert Jewel Reserve
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed February 28, 2020 (edited October 8, 2020)I know this isn't sweetened, but I almost can't believe this isn't just syrup. A perfect sweet profile bourbon with just a hint of spice and char. Absolutely one of the best bottles I've ever had or in my collection. It reminds me a bit of oaky, distilled maple syrup with a rye burn on the finish80.0 USD per Bottle -
Bomberger's Declaration (2019 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 28, 2020 (edited February 19, 2023)This is probably my favorite bottle in my extensive collection. It smells like marshmallows and creme brulee. A touch of vanilla and Maple syrup. Even with my nose entirely in the glass, there's almost no burn. Flavor wise, there's almost a French oak wine smoothness to this, although the flavor is burnt sugar and creamy vanilla pudding. The best part about this is the way it just coats your mouth and lingers. There's no part about this finish that disappoints. Every time I come back to this, I regret having not bought more bottles.100.0 USD per Bottle -
Thistle Finch Black Pepper Flavored Whiskey
Flavored Whiskey — Lancaster, PA, USA
Reviewed February 25, 2020 (edited March 17, 2021)Smells way better than it tastes. On the nose, I get honey and chrysanthemum tea. I'm strongly reminded of an instant chrysanthemum tea my mom bought me from the Asian grocer when I was growing up. Also notes of rum on the nose. Flavor wise, this is a sugary, rum like whiskey, with hints of sweet tea. I get the flavor component of tellicherry peppercorn, but none of the spice. I would have expected the opposite. Honestly, this tastes like a cross between cheap sweet tea vodka and rum. I don't know what to do with this. If you want whiskey, this is a 1.5/5. If you just want some kind of interesting flavored spirit, maybe it's a 2.5/5.38.0 USD per Bottle -
I don't know why all the hate for this? Yes, it's light. It's not going to blow any minds. But I've certainly had more highly rated whiskeys (by a small margin) that I consider more offensive or flawed than this. On the nose, subtle notes of saltwater taffy and oak, a hint of caramel and a light whiff of nail polish remover, fresh cereal and a hint of butterscotch or brown sugar. Flavor is light and refreshing. It reminds me of a less sweet version of Malahat black tea rum. The flavor is more brown sugar than caramel, a touch of new oak, applewood, black tea, fruit, and salt -somewhat scotch-like. Very smooth. Somewhat long, but uncomplex finish. I may be somewhat biased, because I picked up a 375 ml bottle on clearance for $8. But I think the hate for this is undeserved. I suspect if you tried this blind, your find it we're a light, uncomplex, but otherwise enjoyable whiskey that would be hard to classify as a bourbon, Canadian, or scotch, but somewhere in between all three.16.0 USD per Bottle

I immediately knew I wouldn't like this from this smell. I couldn't remember exactly what it reminded me of, but the taste of it was just as negatively familiar. Then I read the description, and I realized. I really don't like that chocolate rye malt flavor. It's less strong than some of the other chocolate rye malt whiskeys that I've had but even a width of it turns me off of the whole thing entirely. Look. Maybe you like that chocolate rye malt thing that Woodford did or Corsair did, but this tastes like oval teen flavored scotch. It's going to be a no for me, dawg

Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye Whiskey
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 21, 2020 (edited June 8, 2020)There it is again! That unmistakable, Beam peanut flavor profile! On the nose, a very attractive fruity scent profile with with butterscotch toffee, caramel, and peaches. Not a lot of spice or pepper. The first thing that hits me is the peanut profile that comes through in all things Beam. After a minute or two to open up, the rye spiciness is more evident. But this is a very light rye even at 100 proof. Some bright jamminess with a touch of bitterness at the end gives this depth, and the finish is medium-long, but overall not complicated nor evolving. At $20, it's hard to say that this isn't a good value, but it's also not a hidden gem that punches above it's weight21.0 USD per Bottle -
A mediocre, mid-bottom shelf bourbon with a slightly different flavor profile than standard Jim Beam or Elijah Craig. So don't be fooled by the distillery's campaign of artificially created scarcity. It's not better than either of those two bourbons. Just different. It might be rare in your state, but I can buy it by the case in New Jersey at retail. To me, BT is the definition of a forgettable, well bourbon. Too bad it's been priced out of that class (it used to be $16, now I can't find it under $28). It's not offensive. There’s enough here for someone who is just getting into bourbon, or for use in mixed drinks. Personally, I never reach for it neat and actually prefer Woodford Reserve or Jim Beam Black, which is similarly priced.32.0 USD per Bottle

I'm completely, pleasantly surprised. I was expecting something gimmicky and disgusting. In actuality, it works. I'm not sure what to say about flavor other than this is smooth and tastes like cold brewed coffee whiskey. The nice thing is that there is no sugar added, unlike most coffee vodka. The nose has a pleasant, soft, cold brew aroma that is coffee first, whiskey second. The flavor is smooth, and tastes like mildly extracted coffee fused with Jameson. I guess, I'm pleasantly surprised because it tastes like what I hoped it would taste like, instead of tasting like what I feared it would taste like.2.5 USD per Shot

Pike Creek 10 Year Rum Barrel Finish
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed February 17, 2020 (edited July 1, 2020)Solidly forgettable, inoffensive whisky with the usual characteristics and body of rum finishing: light, thin, sweet. Sweet in a straight, sugar sweetness kind of way. None of the deep fruit sweetness notes associated with better finishes (Port and, to a lesser extent, sherry). Vanilla in the way rum often reminds you of vanilla. Lacks the deep oak or wood notes you would want from something carryng a 10-year age statement. A fleck of pepper in the finish. Smells like watered down bourbon but tastes like 50/50 scotch and rum. I can't decide if this is worth the $27 cost of admission. I'm going to say no. I've had better $15 bourbon.27.0 USD per Bottle
