Glenlivet 12 Year Double Oak
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 9, 2017 (edited July 9, 2017)Tasting notes are accurate. Vanilla and caramel with no burn. The finish reminds me of caramel cream candy. -
Nikka Taketsuru 12 Year Pure Malt
Blended Malt — Japan
Reviewed March 5, 2017 (edited March 9, 2017)Interesting. More to follow as I experiment with this more. So far, this has potential. Tried it neat and on ice with a drop of Vermont maple syrup. -
Feb 2017. This was recommended to me as a good choice for a new-to-scotch person as well as being a flavorful blended scotch on a budget. Saw a review that said the longer it stays in your mouth, the more it tastes like caramelized onions and that it is well paired with charred meat or poultry. That was intriguing so I gave it a try. Bottom line up front, this one is not for me. I picked up what I interpreted to be overpowering pipe tobacco on the nose. I’m not particularly fond of that so perhaps mentally I was already done with this. The mouth feel was uneventful. I did pick up the sweetness. The finish had a little bite. Never really got the caramelized onions but in its defense I was drinking this neat and without any charred meat. I labeled this one, “Drink this when ‘regular’ friends visit or when making cocktails.”

Feb 2017. Call this a solid 3.5. I’m experienced with Caribbean rum but relatively new to Scotch. I found this to be a pleasurable combination. The nose delivers as promised with fruits and toffee. I liked the mouth-coating feel. Seemed to be a good balance of all the flavors. Nothing stood out or overpowered but there is a lot going on (read: complex). Given a choice between the DoubleWood 12 and this I would pick the DoubleWood. But they are both good and I can see myself keeping a bottle of this handy.

Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 26, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Feb 2017. While I have only had the pleasure of tasting about a dozen selections, this is one of my top three favorites. I am quickly learning I prefer full bodied and sherry casks. Good nose and taste is balanced with seemingly the right proportions of everything. -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 26, 2017 (edited December 9, 2018)Feb 2017. Of the dozen-ish scotches tried to date this in the top three. Tried it in a 50ml ‘trial size.’ Went back immediately for a 750ml. Both are gone. Tried this with a Glencairn glass. Pleasant vanilla and toffee notes. Smooth and balanced on the palate. This had a very smooth and creamy mouth feel. The everyday collection will be incomplete unless there is one open bottle of this plus one full bottle backup.
