Tomatin 12 Year Bourbon & Sherry Casks
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed June 28, 2019 (edited July 8, 2019)Pale yellow, thin legs. Sherry dominant on the nose. Hay and honey. Floral but not overly sweet. Bright and fresh honeydew and ambiguous apple/pear but maintains a cereal note. Gently sweet on the tongue. Relatively one-dimensional and 100% in-line with the nose. Honeydew, unripened pear, and cereal grain. Astringency throughout the mouth that says it’s a touch more harsh than the 86 proof, but not unpleasant. Here at the end of the bottle, it still leaves a lot to be wanting, but my opinion has improved significantly over my initial tastes. Not anything special and a relatively pedestrian Highland, but IMO it’s a touch better (and cheaper) than Glenlivet and similar whiskys. -
Heaven Hill White Label Bottled In Bond 6 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 23, 2019 (edited July 15, 2019)Medium amber in the glass. Legs start quickly but linger. Moderate viscosity. A mild nose. Vanilla with a hint of peanut. Traditional bourbon smell, especially HH products. Starts sweet. Green apple, peanut, a touch of char, nice splash of mint and proof spice on the edges of the tongue and then building through the long finish. Lingering cinnamon, cedar, and minty iodine. Impressive, bold, balanced, and nuanced for the price point. Plenty of character without ever being rough. Would stand up beautifully in a spirit-forward cocktail. A lost gem - we’ll see what its 7-year replacement is and costs soon! -

Old Forester Mint Julep
Flavored Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 4, 2019 (edited November 21, 2021)Enjoying more than previous tasting. Had a pour or two waiting for my mint simple syrup to cool for homemade juleps tonight. The key is tons of crushed ice and a little extra mint tossed in. -
J. Henry & Sons 5 Year Small Batch Wisconsin Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Wisconsin , USA
Reviewed March 31, 2019 (edited July 31, 2021)Not outstanding, but pretty enjoyable overall. Has a slightly funky cherry, vanilla, and oat flavor that I seem to find in a number of craft distillery bourbons... not sure where that comes from, but it’s distinctive. -

Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year

Reviewed March 27, 2019 (edited July 13, 2019)Belated. Abbreviated notes: Really really really nice. Gentle cinnamon nose. Spearmint and cinnamon candy, approachable spice. Loving this stuff. 5-10 more proof would be perfect but no complaints. Some lingering anise.100.0 USD per PourJulep -
George T. Stagg Bourbon (Fall 2016)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 27, 2019 (edited August 28, 2020)Belated. Neat. Glencairn. Dark chocolate brown color. Medium to heavy body. Legs very slow to form. Dominant chocolate covered cherries on the nose, with a creamy frosted flake background. Vanilla and obvious ethanol, but not a huge singe. On the palate, again dominant cherry syrup and milk chocolate with chili pepper. Bitter orange rind. Sweet corn and vanilla. The proof tingles the entire mouth, but it is complementary and highlights the chili pepper. Just an incredible burst of flavor that is a treat to savor.
