When I tried this, I'm not sure my palate was ready for the complexity and peat this brings to the table. I was only able to enjoy it after a second round of cubes were allowed to dilute the stuff. My guess would be that if I were to have it again as my taste has been refined, I would be more open to the campfire by the sea experience that it offers. UPDATE: As I suspected, after a few years away, my second experience was significantly better. A room temp neat pour = sweet smoke. Very sweet, actually. quite enjoyable, and a juxtaposition found uniquely in an islay Scotch. Fruity and floral with notable salty/sea notes. Nose is all smoke and sea. Very smooth with no burn at all.37.0 USD per Bottle

Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited November 13, 2019)Very good and amazingly rich for a 12 year, but not quite a standout for the price point. Would be the best $45 bottle, but is only a solid competitor for its asking price. Rich, creamy texture. Gentle sweetness. Mild saltwater with fruit rind. -
Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited March 18, 2020)A rockstar. Sweet and approachable, but don't mix this with a soda unless you're in the mood for syrup. That being said, this is incredibly affordable as a longstanding staple that predates the bourbon boom. Revisited. Really impressive smoothness when neat. Upped rating to 4 stars. Great bourbon for the price. I see why the weller products stand out - a very unique palate. Minty and herbal, in a very pleasant way. Only the mildest menthol burn. Excellent and affordable wheated bourbon.21.0 USD per Bottle -
Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited January 12, 2017)Fine in your average meat market bar with coke, but I it's only a go-to for people that don't care enough to actually explore the world of whiskey. Save your liver for something far more impressive. -
Buffalo Trace Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited September 12, 2018)Smooth and easy recommendation for a "step up" from the everyday stuff. Nice enough to feel special, but you shouldn't feel any qualms tossing it in with a mixer.24.0 USD per Bottle -
Templeton Rye 4 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Iowa), USA
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited September 11, 2018)Very strong cinnamon profile. It's so bold that's really all I get. Neat there is a distinctive licorice undertone, but it hides with a little water or ice. Perhaps more of a woody licorice, like angostura bitters. Sweet, but not cloying and sticky like schnapps. Very clean and smooth and oh so spicy. A little pricey for what it is, but my favorite rye. Really not too up in arms about the sourcing and flavoring evisceration they are going through... It's like people knew nothing about the industry. I knew a quick Google search after my first sip 4 years ago that it wasn't from Iowa, and many more whiskies have flavorings than we realize. Forget about the hype and drink what tastes good.35.0 USD per Bottle -
Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2015 (edited August 20, 2021)A favorite of the mid-range bourbons. Affordable, complex, flavorful. Was introduced to it in a 3-way taste off vs. Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek. The bird was the clear cut winner. Much smoother and more playful on the palate. I kept going back to get more. Also great for higher end cocktails. A great one with apple cider, lemon, and maple syrup... oh lord it's good.31.0 USD per Bottle
