Laws Four Grain Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Colorado, USA
Reviewed August 12, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)Not a huge fan. It reminds me of candy corn and has a lot of barrel spice. Nose: Sweet candy corn and ethanol Palate: Sweet candy corn with dark fruit and tobacco. Typical caramel and honey. Finish: Medium length with barrel bitterness and pepper. Mouthfeel: It has a solid mouthfeel, pretty much the only redeeming quality of this whiskey in my opinion -
Midleton Very Rare 2016
Blended — Ireland, Ireland
Reviewed August 12, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)I love this bottle for what it is. It is an approachable easy drinking whiskey for special occasions. It will not scare anyone unaccustomed to whiskey away. It’s extremely well balanced, but honestly I find it hard to justify the cost. Nose: Honey and creamy vanilla. Maybe a little shortbread. Palate: Honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and a smooth spice Finish: Medium finish with a noticeable oak pepper. Mouthfeel: Not viscous but not thin. -
Bunnahabhain 12 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 8, 2020 (edited September 24, 2020)This is fantastic and is way better than I expected. One of the best scotches that I’ve had. Totally surprised and way more complex than I expected. Nose: Butterscotch and coastal salt air and lightly peated. Palate: Smoke, slight cinnamon, vanilla . It’s very creamy. There is a light citrus that shows up too, but I can’t pin it down. Finish: Vanilla and smoke which eventually leads to a light ash flavor. Mouthfeel: Slightly creamy and quite friendly. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed August 8, 2020 (edited September 19, 2020)Very good for it’s age. Balcones whiskey just has a corn dust smell that I can’t get past. Nose: Corn dust and dark fruit. Palate: Dark fruit with burnt sugar notes and some sort of nut. Finish: As usual, it’s pretty hot with a long finish. Mouthfeel: Quite viscous -
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 8, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)Very easy drinker, but I feel there is better scotch at this price point. Nose: Honey and raisins Palate: Dark fruit and raisins with vanilla Finish: Spicier than expected with the sweet palate. A little bit of ethanol. Mouthfeel: Not heavy but not thin and kind of dries out your mouth. -
Macallan Double Cask 12 Year
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed August 4, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)This is very nice and I prefer it to the regular sherry finish. It has darker notes and doesn’t come off quite as sweet, but I need to do a side by side. It is not the most complex but man I could drink this all day. Nose: Maybe chocolate? I get a dark malt smell and some dried fruit/ fig Palate: Dark chocolate and dried fruit again Finish: Dark malt like in a good stout and a late ethanol hit but it is very friendly. There is the slightest bit of smoke/ peat but it barely shows up. Mouthfeel: Slightly creamy -

Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt
Blended Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 24, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)This is a great sweet scotch. Might use it to fill my decanter with it. Nice for a relaxed dram in the evening. Nose: Butterscotch, honey, and caramel. Also, barley and I almost get toasted marshmallows. Palate: Very sweet with light citrus, butterscotch, honey, and caramel. Finish: Spicy and short, reminds me of baking spice. Mouthfeel: Very friendly, slightly thin. -
Jefferson's Ocean Aged At Sea Voyage 20
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed July 23, 2020 (edited October 19, 2020)Very solid pour and much sweeter than the voyage 17 and probably more easily considered a classic bourbon flavor profile Nose: Hints of caramel, vanilla, and pepper Palate: Salty with strong caramel flavor fades into light hints of mint Finish: Very approachable and finish is medium long Medium: This is where I think Jefferson's earns its price tag. They are all very easy drinking and approachable. -
This is an amazing bang for your buck bourbon. Sweet heat! If you think quintessential bourbon, this is one of the bourbons that pops into your mind. Nose: corn dust, vanilla, green apple, baking spice Palate: caramel, vanilla and oaky pepper Finish: dry, tannic, and bitter. It’s surprisingly long for the abv. Mouthfeel: Everything you would expect from a good bourbon. Not too thin, but nothing special.
