This is one of the most complex and unique ryes that you could ever have. I don’t know if I’ll buy a bottle because it’s not my exact flavor profile, but it’s definitely complex. It’s hard to get past the sweet corn smell. Nose: Sweet corn, dark fruit, dark chocolate, and a smokey pipe tobacco, and maybe leather???? Palate: Dark chocolate, roasted malt from a stout beer, baking spice, cinnamon Finish: The same finish as if I’ve had a heavy heavy stout beer. Mouthfeel: Balcones is awesome at this. I don't know if they don't have a viscous whiskey.

Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed July 18, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)Very good rye, but honestly a little over priced for what you’re getting. It’s pretty balanced across the board and nothing stands out to make this unique. Similar to Bulleit rye but almost three times the price and maybe even less complexity. Nose: Vanilla and baking spice with a hint of orange Palate: Caramel, baking spice, vanilla, and holy crap it’s spicy. Slight hint of eucalyptus. Finish: Spicy long finish with barrel tannin and peppered oak. Mouthfeel: Very good mouthfeel. It's definitely not thin. -
Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed July 11, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)My least favorite Irish whiskey so far. Not to say it’s bad but it doesn’t fit my flavor profile. I think I would prefer their non-rum finished whiskey based on the notes I’m getting in this. This is closer to a Speyside scotch than I’ve ever had from an Irish. Nose: Corn flakes and ethanol (it sounds terrible but I really enjoy the nose) Palate: Honey, banana bread, and spiced rum (not a fan of the rum flavor for some reason) Finish: Thin but it lingers, kind of metallic. Mouthfeel: Very average. -
Very solid pour. It is maybe the best bottle that I’ve had to introduce someone to peat. I really enjoy it but I don’t know if I want a bottle except to introduce people to a certain style. Every flavor comes off muted but they are there. I think Islays have ruined me... Nose: ashy smoke with citrus, somewhat floral. Palate: gives subtle flavors of peat and sweetness. I get a lot of vanilla and a lemon finish, but every flavor is subtle. Finish: medium short with slightly peaty flavors.

High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed June 26, 2020 (edited September 14, 2020)Fantastic rye! This is my benchmark for ryes. It's hard to justify spending more on a rye for this quality. Nose: Caramel, Clove, Vanilla Palate: Carmel vanilla, rye spice, and mint Finish: The best part, viscous, medium heat, long flavor Mouthfeel: One of the best parts of the whiskey and it's definitely one of the characteristics that set it apart from other ryes. -
Andalusia Stryker Smoked Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed June 16, 2020 (edited September 15, 2020)Had this blind and I thought it was a scotch about 12 years old. Nose: Peat, bbq smoke, ethanol, dark fruit Palate: Sweeter than expected, peat, smoke, and butterscotch notes. Finish: Medium and oily Mouthfeel: Comes off hot and viscous. It feels heavy if that makes sense.
