Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition Style Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 10, 2018 (edited February 3, 2020)Aroma starts sweet, almost sweet tea-ish with baking spices like cinnamon and allspice, then morphs into rye bread and a little cherry. There’s something underlying in the aroma and a bit in the taste. Toast? Malt? I can’t quite place it. The flavor has plenty of rye spiciness, followed by a sugary sweetness. It finishes smooth and sweet with vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. Very enjoyable and very affordable!18.99 USD per Bottle -
It has a soft sweet aroma full of vanilla backed with oak and light honey. The flavor is malty with a BIG vanilla note. There is some charred white oak but it is very soft, also has an almost peaty taste towards the finish. The vanilla is very pronounced throughout which is delicious! The body is light and creamy. Thoroughly enjoy this on a hot summer evening neat with a glass of water on the side.

I gave this 4 stars for one simple reason: it continues to challenge me. When I first tried it I thought it was overly woody and dry. The aroma was loaded with rye and oak with a hint of caramel. The taste...whoa. I drink whiskey neat, and I was almost taken aback by how dry and woody OF is. Not oaky, as in rich earthy oak. I’m talking WOOD, as in well cured antique lumber. This is followed up with a good wollop of rye, a bit of char, and a dry almost gin-like heat that carries into a surprisingly long finish. Then I got the notion to drop an ice cube in, and it opens up into a wonderful rich bourbon, still full of that dry woodiness that I’ve not encountered elsewhere. All this at a mere 86 proof, color me intrigued...
