Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 27, 2021 (edited December 14, 2021)Lux Row Distillery has a history of bringing back the past. Like their Flagship Bourbon Blood Oath they have created magic again with their Daviess County Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This 96 proof offering brings back a heritage dating back to 1874. Daviss County Distillery paved the way for over a dozen other distilleries opening in Daviess County, Kentucky before Prohibition. Lux Row is honoring this rich history by reintroducing the unique blend used in the original bourbon. Two mashbills make up this rather tasty offering. To bring the smooth and the sweet they use a wheated mashbill, and to bring the spice they use a rye mashbill. Combined they bring a quite interesting taste from the past into your glass. Nose: The nose is mild and has a nice earthy sweet corn, cinnamon, and a hint of orange zest at the end. Pallet: The cinnamon is nice and warm up front leading to the smooth mild spice of rye and Honey. It is just oily enough for the flavors to grab the tongue and be a constant reminder of what you just experienced. The Finish is nice and sweet tapering off to a mild cigar smoke. If the 96 proof hits you a little hard just add a few drops of water and the nose becomes softer and the pallet less oily and even smoother. Try it both ways and find which you prefer. #CorkandKeg #BourbonLife #BSandBourbon -
Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed October 6, 2020 (edited September 4, 2021)Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon In a small distillery squeezed under a bridge in Waco, Texas a group of guys wanted to put out a spirit that was new and exciting. After some thought and consideration they decided to make a go at it with Blue corn in their mashbill. This Bourbon is made from a four grain mash bill of roasted blue corn, Texas wheat, Texas rye, and malted barley and bottled at 46% ABV. The Blue Corn gives the spirit a different tone than most other bourbons. Let’s dive in and see what the Blue Corn Brings to the table. The nose is an amazing creamy caramel corn. As I was nosing this it took me straight to homemade caramel corn I had during fall festivals. Then honey entered the picture as the sweetness continued to bounce around my head. Just as the nose was ending peppery oak made a showing. On the Palate: The sweetness really sits on the lips as the blue corn crosses the tongue. To tell the truth this had a little funky something in it. I went to it again and then it hit me. Something I have never had as a note. Chive….. After the Chive note started to fade another note I have never experienced came to surface. Spanish Corn Salsa….. I could taste the corn, tomato, onion, and roasted pablano pepper. All of a sudden it hit me. This bourbon is truly Southwest through and through. If you are big fan Southwest favors this just might be the Bourbon you are looking for. The finish is smooth with the sweetness of the corn salsa hanging out mid tongue like a Mariachi band front and center. Then the flavors start fading away as they move on playing to the remainder of the crowd. I have to say that when I first tried this I was a bit shocked to see that the blue corn made such a difference from the sweet nose to the surprisingly different tasting notes. Give it shot and see if you get the same outcome I did. Cheers! -
Penelope Barrel Strength Bourbon (Batch 2)
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited June 5, 2021)Nose: Even though this is a Barrel Strength whisky the nose is nice and friendly to your nose. The notes are young and earthy with caramel corn, a hint of orange, and fresh cut hay. Pallet: This drink in nice and clean with the heat of cinnamon and the corn stands out with a hint of white pepper. Being a Barrel Strength it is hot, but it is also smooth. The burn stops at just the right spot on the back of the tongue while the rest of the of the journey is nice and smooth. Finish: The cinnamon hangs out on the tongue nicely and in the right spot to complete the storm of flavors when it is met with the remnants of the nose. As the cinnamon starts to fade the taste of fresh from the stalk raw corn from the cob makes a showing with a sweet, creamy, all natural finish.51.0 USD per Bottle -
As with all my reviews I am trying this neat. The nose is a welcomed buttery strawberry cinnamon crisp that is followed by a hint of leather. The pallet is sweet cherry vanilla that sits on the tongue reminding you just how nice the next sip is going to be while the mild burn stops nicely just in the throat with the rest of the journey being nice and smooth. After sitting for a moment inhale softly through the nose and see if you can pick out the hint of caramel corn left from the aromas in the nose and the flavors on the pallet. Enjoy! Cheers.30.0 USD per Bottle

Nose - Lemon grass and Spiced Apples. No real note of rye. Mild and kind of buttery. On the pallet there is a mild fruitness with the apple coming through and the rye makes a mild showing after the apple on the front. Then a hint of tobbaco after the fade. It falls off just short of the perfect time. Almost long enough to make a memory, but then it fades. Crisp and dry in the end. This would make a great mid summer day sipper outside no matter the reason. I can't wait to see what this does after sitting in a barrel 4 more years.35.0 USD per Bottle

Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Tawny Port Wine Barrels (2020 Cellar Collection)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 8, 2020 (edited August 12, 2020)This review is based on the drink being neat. The nose is a very mild with buttery bread, cinnamon, and apple. Even burying your nose in the glass isn't going to bring out the alcohol burn to the senses. The pallet is a mild corn and vanilla. The port sweetness comes through in the end and sits on the tongue like a whisper. It has the initial burn to the tongue, but turns smooth as it makes it's way down the rabbit hole... This is a very mild drink. Be great on a hot summer night outside taking in nature and listening to the sounds that are around you.51.0 USD per Bottle -
Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 23, 2020 (edited August 12, 2020)Nose is strong vanilla, caramel, and cherry daring you to nose it one more time before your first sip. Pallet is a hot cinnamon and caramel blend waking the senses. In the finish cinnamon soaks into your mouth and lingers allowing a memory of what you just experienced then a hint of smoke becomes present just at the tail end. This being a BIB it is going to be strong. Thankfully it isn't too overbearing.50.0 USD per Bottle
