Evan Williams Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 18, 2019 (edited February 19, 2021)Barreled: Jan 18, 2010 Bottled: April 26, 2018 Nose: butterscotch and sweet corn, soft but just rich enough Palate: rich, oily, cherries, vanilla Finish: all the oily smooth sweetness pops to attention with some rye spice at the end that finishes nicely This bottle continues to improve with time opened. It’s interesting. The bitterness present when I first opened this bottle has mostly gone and been replaced with a nice nutmeg rye spice. -
Improvement over the first tasting after this bottle was opened about six weeks. Nose: vanilla spice and yes corn. Hints of butterscotch and less of the funk from before, hints of biscuits and tea Palate: quite rich and sweet, but hot on the mid palate, nutmeg, heavy spice on the end Finish: rye kicks it up a notch along with the proof for significant warmth, still rich and bright The nose is fantastic now but toward the finish it gets a bit muddled. Will check in with it later.

Nose: honey, butterscotch, bread, spices, light fruits, malted barley, hints of oak Palate: rich and sweet with more pear, honey, vanilla, apple, some additional spice on the backend Finish: barley comes out more at the end and this trends toward scotch territory generally I recommend bourbon drinkers try Teeling Single Grain if they want to branch out into Irish, but this is another excellent choice. It’s rich for a 80-proofer, and has enough spice and familiar flavors, but diverts into Irish whiskey territory with ease. I like to call this the Buffalo Trace of Irish whiskey.

Old Forester Single Barrel Bourbon 90 Proof
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 16, 2019 (edited April 17, 2019)This is my 100th review. Single Barrel is a more mellow Old Forester 1910/20. Quite balanced. It reminds me a lot more of Woodford Reserve (and their double oaked) more than the standard Old Forester 86. If you want something less in your face than the 1910 and lower proof than the 1920 you’d enjoy this. -
Jim Beam Black Label Extra-Aged
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed March 16, 2019 (edited April 27, 2019)Nose: sweet, slightly smoky with corn and slight ethanol Palate: hints of honey and butterscotch Finish: smooth with little warmth. A sweeter and less nutty, slightly bolder version of what I get from Evan Williams black label. Rough around the edges and only slightly better than the mainstream Jim Beam white label. I’d imagine it’s a blend of 4-8 year bourbons since it lost the 8-year age statement awhile back. Not bad for what it is. Easy to sip just not as balanced as other bourbons in the same age range. -
Balanced from start to finish, this is my any-day bourbon. It is easy to drink neat, can be great in cocktails, and a fantastic price MSRP for what you’re getting. Nose: bright with caramel, butterscotch, fruity. Palate: moderately rich with vanilla and spice. Finish: some warmth with rye cinnamon spice. Goes great with a cigar. Store selects of these bottles can be very good and I’ve scored those higher in the past.23.0 USD per BottleLiquor Barn

Heaven Hill White Label Bottled In Bond 6 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 14, 2019 (edited April 7, 2019)The app rating on this is laughable. 79...not close. This discontinued bourbon is fantastic. Especially at the price point it once was sold. From the honey and sweet corn nose to the spicy oak finish, an underrated bourbon if there ever was. Nose: honey, mint, tea, oak, butterscotch Palate: rich with more butterscotch, spicy vanilla, hints of toffee Finish: not too brittle, not too creamy; quite balanced for a bottom shelf whiskey This was a hidden gem in Kentucky until they discontinued it. A shame. -
Nose: mint, honey, chocolate-covered cherries, baking spices Palate: bright but rich, more mint and honey, sweet tea, baking spices Finish: mint still there, but additional toffee flavors. Some warmth. The mint is strong after the bottle has been opened a month or so. Interesting change. Not as top-shelf as original tasting (4.5 rating), but great nonetheless. Surprising.
