Hellyers Road Original 12 Year Single Malt
Single Malt — Tasmania, Australia
Reviewed December 14, 2019Very vanillary on the nose. Slight hint of lemon-orange at the end. On the palate a subdued honey mellowness progressing to a spiced lavender finish. Pass. -
Ron Swanson's signature dram. A winner even before opening the bottle. The most pleasant nose - strong aromas of green apple, toffee-apple-esque, with a hint of cinnamon/spice. The subtlety of the quintessential Islay smoke starts here also. On the palate, oak-wood peat intensifies but is bridled and harnessed by the rather sweet strawberry-blueberry notes. A rather short finish more fruity than your usual Lagavulin, but leaves that trademark dry leathery feel in the mouth. The best part (bar the nose) is despite the seemingly fleeting finish, a rather drawn out peaty sensation that lingers and accumulates. A brilliant dram all round.

GlenDronach Forgue 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 22, 2019 (edited September 22, 2022)A step up from The Glendronach 12 y.o. Both finished in Pedro Ximenez. Very mellow cocoa/hot chocolate on the nose with hints of spice. Toffee and dried fruits on the palate. Good rich nutty heartwarming finish. -
Rich dark golden amber coloration. The nose definitely the highlight - true to its name (Pedro Ximenez), the sweet sherry stands out progressing to dried fruit (currants and sultanas) and a hint of vanilla. The traditional Laphroaig peat/smoke shines through on the palate although the sweetness of the PX finish bridles and modulate the peatiness to a gradual crescendo of oaky, peppery spiced finished. The dram warms the chest and lingers. Much like Ardbeg An Oa with the PX finish but much more intense. Prefer this to the An Oa.
