Tastes
-
Nose - pineapple, grape, apple, banana, vanilla, light barrel spice, high ethanol burn. Taste - apple juice, grape, banana, caramel, more nondescript sweet fruity notes, prickly oak, high alcohol bite, finishing quick with fading fruit sweetness and young alcoholic caramel flavors. It’s pretty bad. Not pleasant to sip at all. Definitely a mixer and nothing else.
-
Nose - chocolate, raisin, nougat nuttiness, caramelized apple, grape juice, butterscotch, honeysuckle, mild oak notes, moderate ethanol burn. Taste - raisin, chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla, syrupy grape, praline, sweet cream, chili pepper, marked barrel spice, moderate to high alcohol bite, finishing fairly quickly with butterscotch, raisin, and prickly barrel spice flavors. This is both hotter and (in my opinion) more pleasantly complex than the Hennessy VS offering. By no means is this top shelf, but I find it reasonably serviceable and enjoy it slightly more than the Henny.

Nose - syrupy grape, fig, vanilla, brown sugar, dates, raisin, molasses, honey, butterscotch, light barrel spice, mild ethanol burn. Taste - grape, vanilla, butterscotch, spicy oak, fig, honey, raisin, moderate alcohol bite, finishing quickly with fading grape, vanilla, and rum flavors. I expected much worse. I agree that this would be better relegated to mixer status, but other than being a bit cloying, it’s not a terrible sipper.

Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum
Dark Rum — Bermuda
Reviewed September 27, 2020 (edited January 11, 2024)Nose - molasses, tobacco, leather, raisin, coconut, cardamom, overripe banana, light hogo, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, boozy chocolate, whiff of smoke, low ethanol burn. Taste - molasses, overripe banana, vanilla bean, coconut, sweet tobacco, leather, chocolate, sweet cream, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, raisin, low alcohol bite, finishing long with creamy vanilla, molasses, banana, and baking spice flavors. This is really nice. I like the Black Seal offering for mixing, but this is a solid sipper I could see myself drinking after dinner. It’s on the sweet side, but extremely balanced and understated, not at all cloying. -
Little Book Chapter 4: Lessons Honored
Blended American Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 27, 2020 (edited June 26, 2021)Nose - peanut, dry vanilla and caramel, brown sugar, grape, apple, cherry, cola, dark chocolate, leather, sweet tobacco, grass, moderate ethanol burn. Taste - velvety peanut butter, brown sugar, powdered sugar, rye spices, clove, cola, dark chocolate, sake, tobacco, salted caramel, thyme, moderate to high alcohol bite, finishing long with lingering peanut butter, rye spice, and tannic leather flavors. I really like this. There’s a weirdness to it that must be the brown rice bourbon. I wouldn’t buy a bottle of it, but I’m glad I was able to give it a try. -
Kentucky Owl Confiscated Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 27, 2020 (edited December 11, 2020)Nose - dry roasted peanut, corn, vanilla bean, cherry, butterscotch, cardamom, allspice, clove, rocky minerality, low ethanol burn. Taste - peanut butter, corn, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, cherry, apple, cardamom, black pepper, allspice, moderate alcohol bite, finishing with very sweet peanut butter and brown sugar flavors. Solid bourbon, but I find it very sweet and extremely overpriced for the quality provided. -
Jefferson's Grand Selection Château Pichon Baron French Oak Cask Finish
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 27, 2020 (edited December 2, 2020)Nose - corn, berry, cherry, rich caramel, sweet wine, vanilla, clove, rye spice, moderate ethanol burn. Taste - toffee, butterscotch, cracked pepper, red wine, grape, spicy vanilla, mild to moderate alcohol bite, finishing quickly with fading tannic, sour red wine flavor. The wine flavor is interesting, but I don’t like the sour finish on it. -
Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed September 24, 2020 (edited December 2, 2020)Nose - banana, pineapple, peach, orange, coconut, vanilla, sweet caramel, raisin, maple syrup, light smoke, moderate ethanol burn. Taste - orange, banana, pineapple, apple juice, coconut, vanilla cream, raisin, sour grape, moderate alcohol bite, finishing quickly with sour fruit and young alcohol flavors. It’s not great, but reasonably drinkable. It’s obviously a young expression, based on the presence of the alcohol. I find the flavor profile to be similar to Monkey Shoulder, but I prefer it to this. -
Auchentoshan 12 Year
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 23, 2020 (edited September 14, 2022)Nose - toffee, pineapple and other tropical fruit, honey, honeysuckle, orange marmalade, milk chocolate, raisin, moderate ethanol burn. Taste - sour apple, orange zest, toffee, vanilla, coconut, pineapple, chocolate, raisin, moderate alcohol bite, finishing short with fading sour, fruity, and bright, young alcohol flavors. This is the first Lowland I’ve tried and I’m pretty disappointed. The nose is delicate and pleasant, but the taste is fairly muddled and harsh. For a 12 year aged expression, this drinks very young, sour, and hot. I’m definitely open to recommendations for Lowland offerings that better showcase the region, if anyone has a suggestion. -
Mellow Corn Bottled in Bond Whiskey
Corn — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 22, 2020 (edited December 11, 2020)Nose - buttered popcorn, cola-like caramel, apple, chocolate, banana, cinnamon, spearmint, leather, high ethanol burn. Taste - buttered popcorn, caramel, spearmint, cinnamon, clove, peanut, sour apple, high alcohol bite, finishing quickly with fading corn sweetness and sour and bright, young alcohol flavors. Better than I thought it would be, but definitely not a sipper. I find that this mixes well with coke and have heard it brings an interesting dimension to cocktails.
