Glenfiddich 14 Year Bourbon Barrel Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 21, 2016 (edited August 26, 2017)Really like this one, don't be turned off by the Glenfiddich power house, this one is nicely crafted and in my opinion a steal at $49 for what I get. Very sweet, with lots of sweet baked apple, medium finish, wonderful aromas that indeed remind me of a well crafted bourbon but with the distinct character of a single malt (no confusion here, it does NOT taste or smell like a bourbon but it share some elements). Reminders me a little of a Balvenie but stronger and tastier. 3 drops of water nicely opens it. I will come back later as the bottle changes... -
Compass Box The Peat Monster (Classic Brown Label)
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed July 14, 2016 (edited March 21, 2017)This one is a beautiful surprise. Had it at my hotel in Montreal. Very smoky nose but with some delicacy. The palate is completely surprising compared to what the nose would lead you to expect: sweet and delicate with a very pleasant note of menthol mixed with vanilla. It is almost like you brace yourself for getting punched in the face and instead you receive a sweet kiss that you were not seeing coming. Medium and pleasant finish combining good measures of peat, malt, a bit of menthol -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 3, 2016 (edited August 6, 2016)Total Beverage in Thornton, CO had a special for July 4th and I snagged it for $19 (instead of $36). Absolutely delicious, very powerful nose that explodes with sweetness, vanilla, wood, leather and spices, don't remember sniffing so much in a bourbon. Very pleasant palate that keeps a balance between the components present on the nose with a moderate burn that complements very well that balance. Very pleasant finish, woody without bitterness. Delicious, at least my first pour is, will come back later. -
Not consistent at all with what I was expecting, maybe it was the end of a bottle that stayed too much on the shelf but I found it peaked and dry with no sweetness, no vanilla, none of the characteristics I was expecting. I love peat (big fan of Laphroaig and Lagavulling 16) but this one was almost hard to finish as I found it a bit bitter
