Kilchoman Machir Bay (2016 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2017 (edited July 5, 2018)This is so far one of my favorite Islay scotch. I really enjoy how cohesive it is despite its young age (not perceptible), very delicate combination of peat, smoke, fruit sweetness, citrus. Less in your face than Laphroaig 10 but in my opinion more enjoyable. I think it is a great value for the price point (I paid $54 at total beverage in Thornton, CO but I think it went recently to $64, still worth it) -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 11, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)$40, does not disappoint. Spicy, just the right level of sweetness, the 100 proof is the perfect balance for it. Just a beautiful well integrated bourbon, very pleasant. -
Compass Box Great King St Glasgow Blend
Blended — Scotland
Reviewed October 5, 2016 (edited October 6, 2016)Very nice integration, balanced between fruit and peat, I cannot detect any roughness or bitterness but I find it very dry, I would have like a bit more sweetness. -
Aberlour A'bunadh
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 28, 2016 (edited April 28, 2017)Batch 50, so rich and bold. I need to be in the right mood to drink it but what a beauty. This one does not steal the term "sherry bomb". I had a hard time to find the right ratio of water that works well with it but adding about 1/3 of water seems to do well for appreciating all its goodness and finesse. I like it straight sometimes but that does really require the right mood... -
Glenfiddich 14 Year Bourbon Barrel Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 21, 2016 (edited August 26, 2017)Really like this one, don't be turned off by the Glenfiddich power house, this one is nicely crafted and in my opinion a steal at $49 for what I get. Very sweet, with lots of sweet baked apple, medium finish, wonderful aromas that indeed remind me of a well crafted bourbon but with the distinct character of a single malt (no confusion here, it does NOT taste or smell like a bourbon but it share some elements). Reminders me a little of a Balvenie but stronger and tastier. 3 drops of water nicely opens it. I will come back later as the bottle changes...
