Compass Box The Peat Monster (Painting Label)
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed December 14, 2022 (edited August 13, 2023)Bottled 10/21. Signature Laphroaig 'green' peat lays itself down heavy but I think 'monster' is a bit of a misnomer. Laphroaig peat has a brighter vegetal character than other Islays. Juicy anjou pear, orchard honey, nonspecific baking spices, baked red apples, leather, grassy, mild chocolate, nutty, sea brine, wet hay, shortbread, vanilla buttercream, meyer lemon, real tannic french oak bite cuts through all the sweetness at the end. Probably the lightest colored whisky I've ever had. The palate leans closer to caol ila. Like other compass box labels, does not develop well with oxidation. But that's coming from someone that never tried the legendary Brora releases.64.0 USD per Bottle -
Joseph Magnus Triple Cask Finished Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (Finished and Bottled in Washington DC), USA
Reviewed September 30, 2022 (edited January 27, 2023)Deep, lasting caramel all the way through. Candy corn, bitter French oak spice, nonspecific cognac/ugni blanc grape, red plum, nutmeg, clove, buttery, caraway, apricot, herbal mint, mandarin oranges, floral dew. The PX Sherry influence was more subdued and pleasant compared to other whiskys. Reminds me of dickel a little. Could be since it's a blend.100.0 USD per Bottle -
Bitter & raw oak tannins dominate from taste to finish. The sauternes influence gives it a bit of a extra intense dessert wine flair but it is otherwise indistinguishable from the ugni blanc base. Sultana raisins, cedar, almonds, poached red apple, dried apricots, mild white peach, licorice, herbal, nutmeg, pinch of clove, an unusual nuttiness like a scotch ale. A tad too delicate compared to ferrand amber. Underwhelming.60.0 USD per Bottle

Hearty french oak spice and raw tannins, deep vanilla creme, rich & ripe apricots, orange blossom honey, red plums, grassy honeysuckle, flakey pastry, buttery, fresh flower bouquet, juicy anjou pear, white wine. Fair mix of mature oak tannins as well showing this blend has a bit of a range. Meyer lemon and bergamot cuts through the long lingering sweetness. A good digestif.45.0 USD per Bottle
